There are several facilities where prenatal care, postpartum, family planning care can be
obtained. For those who are from low income families, are in need of affordable health care, and
are having problems with their insurance can obtain care at Kalihi Palama Health Center to help
relieve the stress and uncertainty of being able to afford adequate care.
Kalihi Palama health center, a non-profit organization, is located on 915 North King St.
near the famous Tamashiro market. A multitude of health services are made available not only to
the Kalihi community but to those who are in need of affordable health care services regardless
of the status of their insurance. Among these services are prenatal, postpartum, family planning,
and gynecological care. Their health care team includes: OB/GYNs, certified midwives,
registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, family planning health educators, medical assistants,
and translators.
All laboratory tests, pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and screenings for your blood, urine,
and STIs (Sexually Transmitter Infections), and pap smears are conveniently conducted at
Kalihi Palama health center. For women who are 35 years old and older, genetic counseling is
offered. Referrals to the WIC (Women Infant Children) program can be done here. Assistance
with your health insurance can also be obtained at the health center. Breast feeding education and
counseling for expectant mothers is also offered. Referrals can be made for prenatal care,
delivery, and midwifery care. A free tour of Kapiolani Medical center can be scheduled to show
you where you will be during labor, delivery, and recovery.
All insurances except Kaiser is accepted at Kalihi Palama Health Center. They use a
sliding scale system based on your income to determine your fee rate. New patient forms are
available online to fill out, otherwise you can arrive 30 minutes prior to your first appointment to

fill them out. You should bring your health insurance card, identification, proof of income, all
your health records, and proof of your Hawaii address.
Women, Infants, and Children also known as WIC, is a program that ensures that
nutritional needs are met by providing checks that allow the purchase of formula, food, and milk.
The staff assists in helping you plan healthy meals for yourself and children and acquiring dental,
child care, and immunization. To be eligible you must have a referral from your health care
provider, be either pregnant, breastfeeding, or have children under 5 years older, live in Hawaii,
and have a certain household income. Proof of income from everyone who works in your
household must be provided.
Kalihi Palama Health Center is very big on patient education. They offer several
handouts and express to their clientele the importance of folic acid and other important prenatal
vitamins, how to breastfeed and the benefits of it, nutritional needs during your pregnancy and
more. The health center serve a wide variety of cultures such as Chinese, Filipino Pacific
Islander, and Micronesian ranging from all ages. To ensure that their patients are able to
understand the important information, translators are made available to help bridge the gap in the
language barrier. Following the birth of their child care, referrals, and teaching for the child as
they grow is also offered. These services include child care seat safety/education/inspection,
developmental screenings, and well baby care.
This health care center is incredibly helpful to the lower income families who are having
problems with their insurance and are in need of affordable health care. The wide variety in
services that they can provide to their clients and their ability to provide translators to those
whose primary language is not English can really relieve and assist in their pregnancy care and
following them after.

New patient registration forms are available on their website. You may print them out and fill it
out prior to your first appointment. Bring those forms with your to your first appointment. If you
are unable to print them out arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment to fill them out.
