thegenusBrucella,ofwhichtherearesix
recognizedspecies,belongtoaclassof
Proteobacteria.
IncountrieswhereBrucella isendemic,
pasturemaybecontaminatedbyruminants
whichdeliverorabortoffspringthere,
becausetheplacentasofinfectedanimals
containhighlevelsofthesemicroorganisms.
Milkproducinganimalsmaybecomeinfected
byeatingforagefromcontaminatedpastures
andexcretethemicroorganismsintheirmilk.
Thismilkmaybearisktohumanhealthifnot
pasteurizedpriortouse.
