Description of Lesson: Students will be introduced to the artist Romero
Britto and be shown examples of his work. Students will be instructed to
create their own templates to trace flowers onto their paper. This will allow
students to create the same shapes multiple times and layer them all at the
same time. After the shapes are all traced, students will mix their own colors
to paint each shape. Finally, students will trace their pencil lines with a black
marker to emphasize them.
Lesson Title: Flower Vases in the style of Romero Britto

VA6-2.4 (VA6-VA8)

To assess the work of students, I

will walk around and look at their
progress. Students will turn their
work in to be graded on
completion and execution of the
instructions.

Materials/Resources:

Pencil
Poster paper ( one full sheet per student)
Tempera paint (red, blue, yellow and white)
Black marker
Scissors
Ruler
Paint brush
Water bowl
Paper towels

Colored pencils

Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge):

Social: Students will need to be able to communicate with their peers to
share materials and converse about the project.
Cognitive: Students will need to be able to understand what it means to
overlap and create their work in the style of someone else. Students should
be able to mix their own colors using color theory and apply paint correctly.
Physical: Students should be able to operate supplies safely and properly.
Emotional: Students will need to be able to remain on task for the duration of
the project, even with working in groups to share materials.
Procedures:
Students will use half of the sheet of poster paper to make their picture
plane. To create the picture plane, students will create a large rectangle
using the ruler and pencil. There should be 1 inch margins around three
sides and 2 inch margin on one side to create the large rectangle.
Students will use the rest of the poster paper to make a template for a vase,
three flowers and two leaves. These need to be sized correctly to fit quite a
few within the picture plane.
Students will then trace their vase on the picture plane to look like it is sitting
on the bottom edge.
Students will trace their flower and leaf shapes to overlap and leave as little
room for the background to show through as possible by overlapping the
shapes.
After tracing the shapes to take up as much space as possible, students then
fill in what is left of the background. Students will create 1 inch lines going
different directions.
After all of the drawing is done, students will paint each shape using colors
they mix on their own using previous knowledge from color theory.
After everything is painted, students will use a black marker to trace all of
their pencil lines.
Finally, students can go back and add details to each shape using colored
pencils.
Accommodations: To accommodate for students who make work at a
slower pace, there will be examples for each step to solve any understanding
issues. These students will be placed strategically around the room to make
sure they arent around other students who could distract them. For students
who may work quicker than others will be allowed to create a second work of
art in the style of Romero Britto.
