INTERCOUNTRY ADOPTION
Need of the Hour

Intercountry adoption (also referred to as International adoption or transnational

adoption) is a type of adoption in which an individual or couple becomes the legal and
permanent parent(s) of a child who is a national of a different country.
Intercountry adoption is similar to domestic adoption. Both consist of the legal transfer
of parental rights and responsibilities from a childs birth parent(s) or other guardian to a
new parent or parents.
The aim of this project is to look into the matter of Intercountry adoption, not only from a
social view point but also from a legal perspective.
Over the past 3 decades 265677 babies have been placed in Intercountry adoption. India
holds a noticeable position among the sending countries. This clearly signifies the need to
understand the process in detail which is the very thing that will be attempted in the
project.
Starting with a brief background, The Project will cover the advantages of the process
and legal requirements and criterion for the adoption. Also Acts and international
conventions adopted by India for Intercountry adoption will be covered. This will make
the legal view point of the situation
Problems of the process and what more can be done by the state department will also be
looked into which will make the Social welfare viewpoint of the report.

Along with these the project will also contain some past statistical figures about
Intercountry adoptions from India and some landmark cases and judgments on the issue.
