Description of Activities and Setting

The teacher should start by asking the class what they
already learned about when talking about Australia. The class
should discuss this for around 5 minutes. The questions the
teacher should ask are, What animals did you learn about?
What are some other important things that have stood out to
you?
The teacher will tell the students that, today you will learn
more about the culture of Australia and use the information
learned in the book to fill out a worksheet, by the end of the

4. Guided Practice

The stop-look-listen signal Macaroni and Cheese, everybody

freeze should be used to get their attention. The teacher
should introduce the book, Country Explorers Australia. This
book should be read to the students and after each page is
read the teacher should discuss what they just learned on that
page. After the book is completed, the teacher should hand
out the worksheet provided at the bottom of this lesson. The
teacher should read the directions to the class. The directions
say, Write two things learned about Australia with the topics
given. The teacher should complete the first two with the
class. For example the first topic given is Food; the teacher
should look back into the book and tell them that this book
tells us that some aborigines eat grubs and bugs. The teacher
should then tell the students to copy what she writes on the
board. The word food should be written on the board and then
the sentence Some aborigines eat grubs and bugs. This is
one thing that was learned, the teacher can then ask the
students if they remember anything that was read in the book
or if they can recall information from previous books read to
them about the food Australians eat. If the students have a
proper answer the teacher can explain that they can write
that down but to make sure that it is in a complete sentence.
The teacher should then come up with one more fact. For
example, the next fact could be Australians love to
barbecue. The teacher should then proceed to do this with
the next topic which is, Words that they say that are different
than ours. The teacher should say I remember in the book
they talked about how blue means argument. On the board
the teacher should write, Blue means argument in Australia.
The teacher should ask the students if they can come up with
another fact and write it down if they can, and also provide
another one on the board for struggling students. The other
fact that can be written on the board is, Barbie means
barbecue in Australia.
The teacher should have the students get with a member of
the opposite sex as their partner. The teacher should tell the
students that they should do the next two topics with their
partner and to make sure that the two facts that they write
down are in complete sentences. The students can use the
books on Australia that the teacher has, if they need help and
get stuck on one of the facts. After the students are done the
teacher should call the students back onto the rug and have

7. Closure

The teacher should pass out the next worksheet. The students
should independently recall the information from the book
read and write down two facts for the last two topics that are
given (Art and Animals). The teacher should remind the
students that they should write down what Art is like in
10
Australia, and what types of animals they have in Australia.
minutes
Complete sentences should be used. After they complete this
the students should write down any two fun facts that they
like about Australia at the bottom of the page. (These should
also be done in complete sentences.) The teacher should
collect these when completed.
This assessment should be done with 84% accuracy and at least 3 of the
4 facts should be correct. The other two fun facts the students have to
write should both be correct. Each fact should be completed with
complete sentences and be as accurate as possible.
Students should all get on the carpet and share one of the fun
informational facts that learned about Australia that they
wrote on their assessment. The teacher should ask if the
students have any questions about Australia still and write

them down to go over them for the next class. The teacher

will then clarify some of the important things learned from the
book read today during class. Students can write this down in
their writing journals if they want to.
My assessment results are discussed in lesson evaluation paper.
