Crisis Plan Summary

Lessons learned from the Crisis Management Reading

At the start the organization should differentiate between a problem and a crisis, problems are
recurring and can evolve into a crisis. There should be a crisis plan for when a problem becomes
a crisis. Crisis can be either internal or external.
Preparing for a crisis:

Foresight is important because you dont know when a crisis can strike.
Make assessments and research the potential crisis scenario.
Set specific objectives and goals and regularly review them in a crisis situation.
Form a dedicated crisis control team with clear responsibilities for taking actions, which

should be ready to act on a moments notice should a crisis strike.

Always assume a worst case scenario. It is always easy to scale back than to plan for lost
ground in situation of a crisis.

Train for Crisis:

Regularly revisit and simulate the crisis situation. Make amendments according to the

loopholes in the plan.

Prepare background materials for press statements and media interviews.

When Crisis Strikes:

A war room should be established if the crisis worsens and should be kept separate from

the press. Only authorized messages should be conveyed to the press team.
Create a single communication plan to share information with all the stakeholders.
Neutralize threats to public and employees and always be available for the media.
Dont hesitate to correct the misconceptions being spread in the media, be it social,
electronic or print. Only talk about the facts that can be backed by substantial evidence.
