knowledgehasproventobeextremelyhelpful.Bellgoesintogreatdetailabouthowto
choosetherightimagetogowiththerightstory.Whentheimageandvoiceare
synonymouslytellingacoherentstory,successisachievedwhenexpressingthetruthsof
ourworldhistory.Also,shecommentsveryintelligentlyonwhyanarchivalimageisso
importanttodocumentaries.Shewrites,Thearchivalimageappearstobetheclosestwe
cangettotheoriginalhistoricalreality,asortofseconddegreeoriginal.Theauthor
trulyhelpedmebecauseIcouldnotputmythoughtintowordswhenshecould.
Photographsaretheclosestthingstoouroriginalhistory,andthatiswhyweneedthemto
tellourstories.

Capturing Reality is not only an interesting filmtowatch,butitisaninformation
filled documentary that has provento be,inmyopinion,mymostvaluedsource.Theentire
film is about what goes into making a good documentary in relation to the interview,
visuals, sound, and editing. What guides the film is the interviews of successful
professional documentary filmmakers they provide complex and honest commentarythat
showmanysidesoffilmmaking.

DavidMacDougallinmultipleworksargueshistheoryofwhosestoryisit.Inthis
article,MacDougallstruggleswithhowstoriesaretoldandwhoisactuallytellingthem.
MacDougallstronglyfeelsthatafilmmakerisahugecontributedinthetellingofastory.
Heexpressesthatonceastoryistold,theimpactonthelistenerissoprofoundthatthestory
belongsbothtotheinterviewerandinterviewee.Sincethisbeliefofvisualmediahasthe
powertoinvolvemorepeople,MacDougallfeelsthatitisfarmoreimpressivethanjust
tellingastory,butitisobjectifiednow,possiblyforthegood.MacDougallsays,Itisa
rarebookorfilmthatemergesattheendoftheprocessastheauthorpreconceivedit(31).
Whenthestorytakesyoubysurprise,itismoretrueandhonestbecausemorecanbe
realizedwhenmoreindividualsareinvolvedTheyneedtoapproachfilminginsteadasa
wayofcreatingthecircumstancesinwhichnewknowledgecantakeusbysurprise(35).

film,whichisthefocusofmyresearch.Whenfocusedonfilm,hewritesabouthowfilmis
thenextstepfromphotography.WhilePhotographsonlysuggestlifeinmotion,film
(moreimportantly)hastheabilitytomoverealisticallythroughtimewithgenuinepastand

presentandaconcretefuture(249).Collierimplementshisprofoundobservationthatfilm
canexpressthetruestformsofhumanity,modernorancient,tellingastorybeautifully,
whilethestricturesofscientificabstractswillinevitablyfail.Hisknowledgeon

astorysuccessfullythroughfilm.Hesays,Byfocusingupondiscreteeventsratherthat
uponmentalconstructsorimpressions,andbyseekingtorenderfaithfullythenatural
sounds,structure,anddurationofevents,thefilmmakerhopestoprovidetheviewerwith
sufficientevidencetojudgehimselfthefilmslargeranalysis(116).Hetrustsinhisbelief
thatwhenafilmmakercanstepback,observe,andfilmthehonestmomentsinlife,withall
thatcomeswiththem,heinevitablyallowshisaudiencetoprocessthestory,andtherefore

throughmediadocumentationisbecausewemustnotletourtraditions,family,andstories
vanishrightbeforeoureyes,avalueIalsoholddeartomyheart.
MacDougallsarticleiscompactedwithinformation,notonlytechnical,buthonest
tohisbeliefs.Heconcludeshispaperwithhispredictionforthefutureoffilmmaking.
MacDougallwrites,Afurtherstepwillbefilmsinwhichparticipationoccursinthevery
conceptionandrecognizescommongoals.Thatpossibilityremainsallbutunexploreda

filmmakerputtinghimselfatthedisposalofhissubjectsand,withthem,inventingthefilm
(128).Hestronglybelievesinthesharingofstories,makingthestoryeveryones,notjust
thepersonswhoexperienceditinitially.IamnotsureifIagreewithhisstatement

ThisDavidMacDougallessayisallaboutmemory,andhowimportantthatfactor
playsintoadocumentariessuccess(tellingthestorywell).Hewrites,Filmshave
resemblancetomemory,theyregisterimageswiththelensesandemulsioninaprocess

MargaretMeadsarticlehasproventobeoneofmymostvaluedsources.Mead
doesawonderfuljobexplainingwhyfilms,specificallydocumentariesdoagreatjob
capturinglife,andalsowhytheyaresoimportanttotheworldweliveintoday.Herarticle
practicallybeginswithmymaininspirationfordoingmyprojectshesharesherbeliefthat
notetaking/writingdownstoriesisoutdatedformofstorytelling.Shefeelsthat
anthropologyhasreachedaplacewherewedonothavetowriteit,wecanfilmit,doing
anevenbetterjobintheend.

suspectsthatthereisacertainwaytoproduceasuccessful,honestdocumentaryfilm,which

thatIhavelearnedfromwatchingthisfilmisincredible.Thisdocumentarydoesa
wonderfuljobofcombiningmusic,images,footage,andtestimoniesintoasynonymous
workofhistoricalartthattrulysharessomeheartbreakingtruestoriesoftheHolocaust.
NightWillFallputssomanyofthethingsthatIhaveresearchedintoplayrightbefore
myveryeyes.Beingabletoseetheideasoffilmmakersactuallybeputintoplayisoneof
themostbeneficialwaysoflearningaboutthistopic.AsIdidlovethefilm,Idowishthat

thereweremoretestimoniesfromsurvivorsthemselves.Theonesthatwereincorporated
weredonesowellbecausetheywerehonestandcandid,doneinaveryobservational
cinematicway.

websitesholdandsharevarioustestimoniesofHolocaustsurvivorsvisuallyandwritten
down.Byreflectingonhoweachstorycanaffectme,andthereasonswhytheyaffectmein
thatcertainway,Icanunderstandwhatgoesintomakingasuccessfuldocumentationofa
story.
Iwishthereweremorevideosofthesurvivorstellingtheirstories.Manyofthesites
showthestorywrittendown,andjusttheirvocals,butIthinkitismuchmoreeffective
whenyoucanseethestoryintheintervieweeseyes.Themoreobservationallyhonest
approachiswhatIamlookingfor.
