Risk Assessment

For the most part we used the HIRA model but we added on a formula that
can calculate the chance of success in terms of ability and difficulty level of the task
to give us a better idea of what is more likely to happen and what is less likely to
happen.
Formula: Chance of success = Ability / Difficulty of Task
1-3 is a defined as beginner 4-7 is defined as novice

and 8-10 is defined as

advanced
This marking scheme applies to both the ability level and difficulty level
Once these two numbers are determined, you can divide the ability by the difficulty
and you get a percentage of the chance that you have of completing the task. We
call this the Forristal Scale.

Risk Assessment SAR Exercises

Chance of success = ability/ Difficulty level of task

1-3 (Beginner) 4-7 (Novice) 8-10 (Advanced)
SAR exercise with ODAs usually involves people that are new to SAR and have a
lower ability. (Rating 2)
With the cold weather and the amount of land to cover the difficulty level is a little
higher. (Rating 4)
2/4= 50% chance of success in finding the victim

Summary
We believe overall that our skills courses have been managed professionally
and handled appropriately based on the level of risk exposure. An area that could
be improved is the level of professionalism in some of the younger skills instructors.
Often times when there is a small age gap between instructor and student, the
instructor can lose sight of their professional relationship. Some of the skills
courses that are more thoroughly managed are SRT, Search and Rescue and Rock
Climbing. We believe that these are more thoroughly managed because they
involve a greater amount of risk and overall require a higher amount of precaution.
