Claude Monet Water lilies

Grade: 1st
Directions

Teacher Prep: Setup power point (information on Claude


Monet and his paintings). Prepare tissue paper: cut up
squares of tissue paper in the cool colors and little squares
in the warm colors. Set out construction paper, shape
cutouts for the lily pad (green construction paper), little
yellow squares (construction paper) glue and scissors.

With the students:


1. Present Power Point - 10 minutes
2. Explain Claude Monets life and style of art that he
created.
3. Follow up power point with question time.
4. DEMO 10 minutes
a. Present the project and the objectives
b. Relate this project to our previous one by
discussing warm and cool colors.
c. Demonstrate how to rip the pieces of paper to
mimic Monets brush strokes. (Using cool colors)
d. Explain how the students should paste down the
tissue paper. - Work Time
e. Once the water is completed its time for the water
lilies.
f. Demonstrate how to cut out the lily pad shape
(follow the lines) and paste down.
g. Now create the flower (crumple tissue paper)
using warm colors.
h. Bend in upward direction to create a 3D effect.
i. Paste in the center of the lily. Work Time
5. After each demonstration, students will have work time.
We might not be able to get through both demos if the
students take longer
6. Pass out materials and explain the expectations one
more time (name on back!)- 20 Minutes Work Time
7. Clean up time 5 Minutes
8. While students are cleaning up I use this time to fill out
student acknowledgement slips (Students who followed
directions/waiting patiently/using work time wisely,
etc.
9. In order for the students to line up, I use a type of
formative assessment. I ask the students a series of
questions that relate to the information that was

presented
to them at the beginning of the class period.
10. This is a great way for me to get feedback on what the
student took in from the power point, and what are
some things that we should retouch on.

Description

Claude Monets paintings are among the


worlds most recognizable works of art.
Inspired by his paintings, students can mimic
his brush strokes by pasting down ripped
pieces of tissue paper. Once water is created,
students will create 3D water lilies to
replicate Monets work.

Objectives

- Students will create a picture just like


Monets water lilies, using ripped pieces of
tissue paper to create an image to look like
Monets.
- Students will learn to use cool and warm
colors.
- Students will understand the use of tissue
paper and how it replicates the type of brush
strokes Monet used in his oil paintings.
- Students will become aware of water lilies
after reviewing many images of Monets
work.
