2. Presentation
a. Askstudentsiftheyknow/canguessthemeaningofoneofthewordsandbreakitapart
withthem.ThenpostthewordsPrefix,Suffix,andRootWordontheboardandlabelthe
partsofthediscussedword.
b. InformstudentsthattodaysfocusisprefixesandpresenttheBrainPOPvideoonprefixes.
Discussthepurposeofprefixes.
3. HighlyStructuredPractice
a. Modelcreatingaposterfortheprefixtrifortheclass.Includethedefinition(3)andhave
theclasshelpyoulistasmanywordsaspossiblethatstartwiththeprefixaswellas
illustrations.Addressanymisconceptionsnowandmodelusingtheonlinedictionaryto
researchthemeaningoftheprefixandanywordstheymaylistontheirposter.
4. Guided(semiindependent)Practice/Closure
a. Distributeaposterwithaprefixtoeachtablegroup.Usingscienceteamroles(leader,
materialsgatherer,datarecorder,communicator,andsafetyofficer/neatnessofficer),
studentsaretocompletetheirownposterfollowingtheteachermodel.Teacherwill
monitorandcheckdefinitionsoftheprefixesbeforestudentscanrewriteinmarker.
b. Students(communicators)willpresenttheirprefixposterstotheclass.
5. IndependentPractice
a. Studentswillcopytheprefix,definition,12wordscontainingtheprefix,andiftimea
sentenceusingthemintheirnotebooks.
