INTERESTING FACTS ON JUVENILE DELINQUENTS

Adolescent brains
the two different brain systems : impulse and
constraint

Impulse system/ reward seeking system is easily

aroused which makes kids seek and go after
rewards

Constraint system is still developing very slowly

and its not fully matured until people are into their
20s
Adolescents take more risks in groups
There are much greater activation of reward
centers in the brain when adolescents are in a
group or being watched by peers
When adolescents are playing alone their brain

activity looks exactly the same as an adult

Factors that might lead a court to grant a

waiver petition and transfer a juvenile case

to adult court include:
The juvenile is charged with a particularly

serious offense.
The juvenile has a lengthy juvenile record.
The minor is older.
Past rehabilitation efforts for the juvenile

have been unsuccessful.

Youth services would have to work with the

juvenile offender for a long time.

Pros of Adult Court for Juveniles

Cons for Adult Court for Juveniles

Minors have the right to a jury trial in adult court -most

states do not provide a right to a jury in juvenile court

Juries in adult court may be more sympathetic to a

minor.
In some jurisdictions where dockets and jails are

crowded, the court may be inclined to dispose of the

juvenile's case more quickly and impose a lighter
sentence.

The juvenile is subject to more severe sentences,

including life sentences.

Judges in adult court do not have the wide range of

punishment and treatment options that are available to

juvenile court judges -- such as imposing a curfew or
ordering counseling instead of jail time.
The juvenile may have to serve time in adult jail or

prison, rather than in juvenile detention centers.

A conviction in adult criminal court carries more social

stigma than a juvenile court judgment does.

Adult criminal records are harder to seal than juvenile

court records -- sealing or "expunging" records makes

them unavailable to the public.

CHALLENGES

Drugs & Alcohol are contributing factors to juvenile delinquency

Lack of supervision by the parents enables juveniles behavior.

Some officers believe that the law needs to be modified to not include a
child not going to school or missing a court date a crime. It needs to be a
lesser offense.

There is not much for youth to do that will soak up some of their time and
so they result to going to hangouts and parties where these this are
present.

There are not enough consequences for juveniles for the crimes they
commit.

A lot of the consequences are more for the parents to take care of such as
fines and making sure the juvenile makes it to court.

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

Think about how the rest of your life will be affected by the decisions you make NOW.
It only takes a split second to make a stupid mistake that can ruin your life or the life of

somebody else.

Parents need to take note that what they do greatly affects their children.
Delinquents can seek out programs to help them with their issues such as counseling,

planned parenthood, Cadet Lawman, or tutoring.

Parents need to support them in their choices to be involved in whatever interests them

and encourage them to participate in as many school functions possible.
