CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1- Demonstrate command of the conventions of
standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.5- With guidance and support from adults,
demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word
meanings.
2. Objectives- Students will learn the definitions for nouns and adjectives and how
they relate to each other.
- Students will demonstrate understanding of nouns and adjectives
by using them correctly in a sentence.
3. Essential Question- What are the different kinds of words that make
up a sentence?
4. Lesson Summary- Students will use the song Down on Grandpas
Farm to help them to begin to define and identify nouns and
adjectives within a sentence. Students will replace some of the nouns
and adjectives in the song with their own nouns and adjectives to
demonstrate their understanding.
5. Resources
Down on Grandpas Farm worksheet
Pencils
Colored pencils, markers, etc.
6. Procedures
a. Introduction- Teach the students the words and melody to Down
on Grandpas farm. Tell them they will be creating their own
lyrics to the song.
b. Instruction
i. Introduce the term parts of speech. Ask students if they
know what the term means.
1. Make sure students understand that the parts of speech
refer to the different types of words found in a sentence.
These types can include: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs,
etc.
ii. Identify a noun as a person, place, thing or idea. Ask students
to identify the nouns in the song Down on Grandpas Farm
(farm, truck)
iii. Identify an adjective as a word that describes a noun. Ask
students to identify the words that describe one of the nouns.
Identify these words as adjectives (big, red).

iv. For more advanced students introduce the term


onomatopoeia. Define onomatopoeia as a word that mimics
the sound of the object or action it refers to. Give an example
from the song (beep beep). Ask students to give additional
examples of onomatopoeia.
v. Distribute the Down on Grandpas Farm worksheet. Instruct
student to think of their own nouns and adjectives to insert
into the lyrics of the song. If necessary provide examples.
vi. Have students create an illustration to accompany their new
lyrics. Encourage them to think about how to show the
adjectives they have chosen in their illustrations.
c. Closure- Allow students time to share their lyrics and pictures
with the group. Try singing the song without stopping, cycling
through each students lyrics.
d. Assessment
- Students demonstrate understanding of nouns and adjectives
by citing examples and using them correctly in a sentence.
- Students create new lyrics to a song by inserting new nouns,
adjectives, and onomatopoeias in the correct spaces.
- Students demonstrate their understanding of their new lyrics
through accompanying illustration.
7. Adaptations
- Worksheet contains visual clues as to which part of speech belongs
in which blank space.
- Advanced students will learn the term onomatopoeia and use it
correctly within the context of the song.
- Students work in a small group so that instructor can provide oneon-one assistance to students needing more guidance.
