Plan to Address Standard

The 8 statements of the ALA Code of Ethics will be my
guide for ensuring equitable information access and
respect for patrons privacy and needs. The Code of Ethics
embodies a spirit of service to communities and citizens
which I will strive to put in practice.
I will use notes and ideas from the course I took on literacy
and libraries. Knowledge of the stages of literacy
development and theory-based approaches to literacy
programming and promotion will help me sharpen this
competency.
Institution-specific codes and policies will be my ethical
guidelines, as well as the ALA Code of Ethics. Ensuring
efficient information-seeking behavior relies on my
teaching and communication skills. These are weaker skills
for me which I hope to improve through practice,
continuing education, and professional association
engagement.
I will model enthusiasm for learning by continuously
reading, exploring new technologies, sharpening my
technology skills, and presenting and planning events. I
will create a positive learning environment by welcoming
social interaction, respecting quiet areas, and arranging
the library space for comfort.
Needs assessments, lesson planning, instructional design
strategies, collaborative teaching, and constant awareness
of user needs and interests will help me design and
implement engaging instruction.

I will approach instruction with co-workers in mind,

initiating or joining collaborations when needed or asked. I
will share my knowledge with others when appropriate to
assist or improve services.
Where teaching is required, I will work with other
professionals to deliver instruction that complements or
builds on what they are doing.
Through professional association such as ALA, Public
Library Association, Medical Library Association, Special
Library Association, and regional associations and
chapters, I will seek leadership opportunities and
professional connections.
By thinking of myself and the learning communities I serve
as equal experts in our own respective areas of knowledge,
I will ensure a respectful, open-minded educational
environment where everyone is free to share ideas and be
productive.
I will create programs for information access and literacy
based on principles I learned in courses on literacy,
instructional design, popular fiction, and the world wide
web. In sharing my learning experiences formally or
informally at meetings or conferences, I will encourage
personal and professional growth of other librarians.
Skills I learned in courses related to cataloging, e-resource
licensing, collection development, and administrative
management will serve me in managing, selecting,
organizing, and using information resources and ensuring
access to them.
I will seek knowledge of best practices from the
professional literature and colleagues in my library. I will
reflect on how best practices fulfill the librarys mission and
adjust my practice when necessary to align with the
