Form listening guide
Class Goals and Objectives
The students will be able to identify each section of the music after listening to the song.
The students will have a better understanding of form with the definition of Verse, Refrain, and
Bridge.
The students will be able to accurately transcribe the entire form of the song In the Stone.
Students will then compare the form of the original to the version they have in class to see how
their versions may be different/similar.
Procedures
-Most songs have an introduction, verses, melody, and a bridge. We are going to listen to the
original version of In The Stone to transcribe the form of the song and label each section
of music.
-Listen to the Intro of the song and define where the beat is. Is the beat in 2 or 4? I think its in
4/4, so lets count it that way.
-Define Verse as A different section of a song with a same musical idea and different lyrics
each time
-Define Refrain as A different section of a song with a same musical idea with the same lyrics
each time
-Define Bridge as A different section of a song than the verse or refrain that has different music
and lyrics.
-Listen to the entire song one time through to fill out the first part of the listening guide--only the
first two columns.
-Review the answers to the listening guide.
-Define the order of sections Was :54 the verse or refrain? What about 2:00? 2:35?

-We decided the song was in 4/4, so lets have the class count and the class sing the
Refrain to find out how many measures it has. (8 measures) Label on the board that the refrain
has 8 measures
-Switch groups and sing/count the bridge now. (8 measures) Label on the board that the bridge
has 8 measures
-Have all students count along with the verse to find out how many measures it has. (8
measures) Label again
-Students will use the listening guide to make the correct order of the sections of music (Intro,
Verse, Refrain, Verse, Refrain, Bridge)
-Students will listen and count through the entire song one more time to accurately depict how
many 8 measure phrases are in each of the sections they have just outlined (Intro x4, Verse x4,
Refrain x2, Verse x2, Refrain x2, Bridge x6)
-Students will open their versions of In The Stone and compare their own part with their
transcription of the original to make predictions which of their sections are different/the same. (I
have not seen their score at this point so I do not know what it will be)
-Students will sing through their parts to determine how the form differs, if at all.
-Students will listen to another version of In The Stone to further solidify form terms.
