Necklace and Bracelet Making (Ages 4 and older)

Materials needed:
o String
o Scissors
o Multi-colored beads
Steps:
o Set up materials on a hard surface such as the kitchen
table.
o Measure string according to if you want to make a bracelet
or necklace.
o Tie a knot at one end of the string so beads do not fall off
while making the bracelet or necklace.
o Count the number of beads you choose and talk about the
color of each bead.
o Ask children to make a pattern with the beads (red, green,

red, green).
o Place beads on the string and tie when done.
o Place bracelet/necklace on neck or wrist.
Accommodations:
o Use thicker strings and larger beads.
Simplifications:
o Simplify the activity by holding the string for your child as
they put the beads on. Also, use larger beads.
Extensions:
o Extend the activity by asking your child to arrange beads in
a pattern.
The targeted areas of development in this activity are finger
strength, and pre-math skills such as counting and patterning.

Planting a small garden (Ages 5 and older)


Materials needed:
o Shovels
o Seeds
o Water
o Soil
Steps:
o In your yard, designate a space to create a small garden.
o Dig holes and space them accordingly. Count each seed
and drop them into holes. Cover holes with soil again and
water them.
o Water seeds every day and observe the growth of each
plant with your child.
Accommodations:
o Plant only one flower or vegetable seed.
o Use a larger shovel and larger seeds.
o Guide your childs hands and fingers when planting seeds.
Simplifications:
o Simplify the activity by digging and planting seeds
yourself and asking your child to help pour water on each
planting spot.
Extensions:
o Extend the activity by measuring and documenting the
growth of each plant on a weekly basis.

The targeted areas of development in this activity are thinking


skills, large muscles (arms and legs), small motor skills (fingers
and hands), prescience skills, and

pre-

math skills.

The mission of the Mt. Pleasant Discovery Museum is to spark
creativity, nourish learning, and inspire curiosity of children
through self-directed discovery in an engaging, hands-on

environment.

Open 9-5:30pm Tuesday-Thursday. 9-8:30pm Friday. 9-5:30pm

Saturday. Noon-5:30 Sunday. Closed Monday.

Recommended ages for children attending the museum are 3-7

years of age.
Daily admission: $7.00 per person and $5.00 on Friday. Children

under 1 year of age are free.


By exploring the various exhibits, children are given the freedom
to choose what interests them most. These exhibits target
developmental areas such as small motor skills, pre-reading, premath, pre-science, nutrition, and thinking skills.
