Unit Title: Tennis

Name: Nick Varkatzas

Content Area: Forehand/backhand

Grade Level:9th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

1.5 Explain the use of the principles of biomechanics (leverage, force, inertia, rotary motion, opposition, and buoyancy); apply
the principles to achieve advanced performance in aquatic, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities; and evaluate the
performance based on the use of the principles.
1.2 Demonstrate proficient movement skills in aquatic, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities.
1.7 Analyze and evaluate feedback from proprioception, from others, and from the performance of complex motor (movement)
activities to improve performance in aquatic, rhythms/dance, individual activities, and dual activities.
Big Ideas:
Accuracy needs to be developed before power, and accuracy starts with proper body position.
facing towards the sidelines of the court when executing a back hand or forehand.

Chest and bulk of torso should be

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students can successfully perform forehand/backhand swing 3 times out of 4 attempts.
Students must show an understanding of the necessary biomechanics of the back and forehand by evaluating a demo model
against a teacher prepared checklist and identifying any 5 critical features of each technique.

Unit Summary:
This unit will have the students engaging in various drills and activities centered on improving the back and forehand swing in
the psychomotor domain. This unit will also have an emphasis on helping students cognitively understand and identify the key
elements used when performing a back or forehand swing.

Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level: Asking a question to tap into

prior knowledge. Who knows how to do
a backhand ask the student to model it
for the class.
Give the students a short period of time
to play and experiment with the
equipment before starting the lessons.

Formative: Peer observation-have

students observe and provide feedback
to each other after watching partner
perform back/forehand against a list of
instructor prepared critical features.
Students take and online 5 question quiz
that will gauge their knowledge of the
critical features of the back and forehand

Summative: Skill observation- teacher

observes student attempts at
successfully performing each skill 3 out
of 4 attempts.
Video analysis- students observe
partners performance of the skill on
video and compares it to instructor
prepared critical features list.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
Familiarize students
with the critical
features of the
back/forehand
Lesson 2

Acceptable Evidence:
A passing score on
the quiz that is
corresponds with
lesson 1.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Presentation
Interaction

Lesson Activities: Responding to a voice thread after viewing

the lecture on critical features. Responding to a blog post
involving picture analysis of an individual playing tennis.
Identifying techniques drawn in a diagram and explanation of
how you justify your response.

Student Learning
Objective:
Be able to identify 5
critical features of the
back/forehand.
Lesson 3

Acceptable Evidence:
A passing score on the
webercise that is
embedded in lesson 2

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Interaction

Lesson Activities: Webercise online scavenger hunt looking

for answers to instructor prepared questions related to the
critical features.

Student Learning
Objective:
The get the students
to think critically
about the mechanics
that are part of the
back/forehand.

Acceptable Evidence:
The statements
created by the
students via the
anticipation/reaction
guide reflect that the
student thought
deeply when creating
the statement.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities: The anticipation/reaction guide is designed

to have students search resources for information and then
create statements and place them into an anticipation and
reaction guide to be filled out by a fellow student.
