Migration: Compulsory Insurance Coverage of Agency-hired

Overseas Filipino Workers under RA 10022 amending RA 8042,

otherwise known as, The Migrant Workers Overseas Filipinos Act
of 1995.

Throughout the years, Filipinos are known to be one of the worlds huge migrating
populations, not simply for living and visiting abroad, but particularly for getting decent jobs to
support their families. Apparently, our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are responsible for the
countries consistent economic stability through the remittances they would send every year. It is
then imperative to give these modern heroes the strongest shield of protection for their everyday
struggle in the foreign land. On the year 2010, the Philippine Congress enacted RA 10022,
amending RA 8042, to further provide better OFWs rights and enhancement of protection
throughout the process from application until their actual deployment for work abroad. RA
10022 introduced great improvements to uplift the morale of our OFWs especially the addition
of the Compulsory Insurance Coverage of Agency-hired Overseas Filipino Workers. This paper
reviews our social legislations on the rights of migrant workers supporting the laudable impacts
of the recent amendments brought by RA 10022 to RA 8042. Also, the study provides for
recommendations coming from various sectors involved to further the rights, protection and
benefits of our modern heroes and their families.
