Arts-Integrated Lesson
Jump Jim Joe
Lauren Taylor and I taught our arts-integrated lesson today at Pine Valley
Elementary School. WE focused on the subjects of dance, music, and language arts.
This lesson was integrated because we focused on teaching a song and dance
through the use of a literary device. We integrated the use of poetry (something that
the students are familiar with) into the cultural arts lesson, which focused on music
and dance. We printed lyrics of the song onto a big sheet of paper and focused on
various elements of the writing such as popcorn words, punctuation, rhyming, and
capitalization. After focusing on the language arts portion of the lesson we took the
lyrics the students just learned and taught then the corresponding song and dance.
This enhanced the students learning of the language arts by incorporating the dance.
The expectations and goals before teaching the lesson were clear and concise.
I had high expectations for the student during the language arts portion of the lesson
because they were already familiar with the poetry activity. My main goal was for the
children to have fun, exert some energy, and learn a new song and dance. I believe
we achieved this goal.
I believe many aspects of this lesson went well. The children were very
responsive and cooperative. We had high participation and enthusiasm. I was
surprised that some students who are introverted actually expressed themselves and
had fin dancing and singing. A few challenges presented themselves during our
lesson. During the poetry portion of the lesson, the lyrics were not placed correctly on
the paper and it obstructed the flow of the song. This threw me off and I had to
modify how I accomplished the task. Lauren and I sang the song a bit different, which
also presented a challenge to the lesson.

As with every lesson this semester, I have learned so much from the
experience. Planning this lesson came together very easily. I knew the student would
love to learn this song. Being in kindergarten is hard work and it is always nice to let
loose a little bit. I feel that the objectives were met and they had fun so I consider
that a success!
I would love to teach this lesson in my future classroom. I would first make
sure that the lyrics flowed with the placement on paper. When reading the song, it
has to make sense. Also, if there is another teacher involved in the lesson, I would
make sure that only one of us sings. That way it does not throw off the flow of the
activity.
This experience has taught me that it is important to integrate art into other
subject areas. I believe that the students learned and had fun. With art, creativity is
expressed and that is so important to me. I hope to always weave different subject
areas together and provide maximum learning opportunities for my students.
