Why Teach?
Socrates once said, Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a
vessel. This quote demonstrates that learning is an interactive and inspirationfilled affair. For the students to learn they must invest a keen interest and
dedication to soak up the knowledge set forth before them. If they should reject
the teachings of their instructor, it is because the instruction was poorly delivered
or not legitimized in the eye of the learner. My name is Christian Sutter and I have
a curiosity for the learning process and the impact it has on students later in life. I
went to school in the Blue Valley school district and was blessed enough to have
excellent instructors K-12. I attended Cottonwood Point for elementary, Oxford for
middle, and Blue Valley Northwest for high school and I can say with utmost
certainty that I am as excited for learning the ways of the world than ever before.
This attitude and perspective on learning was developed by the passion and love
for learning that my teachers exhibited everyday in the classroom. My goal in
writing this essay is to explain why learning is the most valuable ability humans
have and why I am dedicating a life-long commitment to teaching because of the
learning experience.
Being a teacher is one of the most important and rewarding professions in
the world. I learned from being on both sides of teacher-student engagement. The
experience that sticks out to me most is when I was in art with my teacher Ms.
Bertrand from elementary school. Everyday Ms. Bertrand would bring an
unrelenting joy about teaching her students the fundamentals of art. Her smile was
always bright, she spoke loudly and made sure each and every one of us was
enjoying ourselves. She would work one on one with us to ensure our artwork
expressed ourselves. Finally she would always tell us to use our imaginations to
make our work creative and meaningful. She taught me how to express myself
through working passionately on my artwork.
6th grade is the year that changed my life forever. I started attending several
different classes in a single day, learning from various teachers in various subjects.
On top of that I acclimated myself to a larger school, with more students and a
seemingly endless path of unknowns ahead. I remember how overwhelming the
new responsibilities of middle school were. I want to teach these students because
psychologically this new experience can create a positive or negative perspective
on school depending on the level on inspiration and drive they obtain from learning
in class. I will give them an experience that is highly interactive, personal and one
that gives them an unquenchable thirst to learn more about my exploits.
A good teacher is one that caters to students special abilities, while
challenging and energizing them with a meaningful curriculum. I have strong
interpersonal skills that allow me to communicate with students on an emotional
and professional level. Im also a very introspective person. Im constantly
reflecting on how my performance is effecting the students development. For
example, when a student answers a question wrong I want to provide positive
reinforcement. I feel I have effective leadership qualities that allow me to
command attention and respect. Yet, Im a very relatable and caring person who
values the students learning experience above all else.

The success of the learning experience hinges on my ability to understand

my students as people and then introducing them to a world of possibility that
theyll tirelessly explore for years to come. By creating a relationship between my
students that demonstrates Im committed to their success, not only as students
but also as people, I will gain full engagement with my classroom. 6 graders are
young and easily influenced by intricate occurrences during instruction, I want to
leave an impression that gives them high hopes for their futures as students. This
new generation is the culmination of our evolution as human beings. I want them
to exploit the ability that got us this far, I want them not only to learn but also
enjoy doing it.
