Academic

Experiences

I participated in a 300 hour Education internship at Adventist University of Health
Sciences. I had a diverse and rich experience during my internship and participated
in teaching activities that included both the generic BSN program and the online RN
to BSN nursing program. My preceptor was Dusanka Hristic, MSN. She has been a
professor at the university for 17 years and specializes in community health
courses.

The types of activities I was fortunate enough to experience and participate in
included the following examples:

1. Assessing I was able to get a first hand look at the ACEN accreditation
process while the university prepared for and went through it.
2. Simulation I was actively involved in two great simulation experiences. The
first one was a high fidelity pediatric with a Laerdal SimBaby. I was briefly
shown the computer controls that can make the baby cry, change vitals and
breathing patterns/sounds and even create cyanosis when the student did
not take appropriate action. Because I felt so comfortable I eventually led the
full simulation. This included prepping the students, passing out roles,
starting the simulation and the running the computer program. Clinical One
of the clinical experiences assessed and led was a Health Promotion clinical
that prepares first year students in lifespan development
3. On-line My preceptor was an online professor for the community health
course, so I had open access to this experience that included collaborative
live discussions once a week that review pre-given questions about the
current module. I was able to lead two discussions as well as grading and
grade counseling for a large course-writing project.
4. Lecture Lectures and learning activities were designed and presented on
musculoskeletal stressors in a pediatric course and diabetes medications for
the pharmacology course. A quiz was created for the student to separate into
groups and then collectively answer.
