Students will understand the importance of professional communication to develop relationships with others for available job opportunities. Materials: Handout- Job Hunting Tips; Pen and Paper Procedure: 1. The counselor will begin the lesson by having students participate in a warm-up activity. Students who are already working part-time will be asked to stand up. The classroom will then be divided into groups, with at least one person who is currently already working parttime separated into each group. 2. Discussion will then continue about what students currently know about finding a job. Those who already have jobs will be encouraged to participate and describe how they found their job opportunities. 3. The handout will be distributed. 4. The counselor will present to students on the different ways that you can find job opportunities: the traditional (newspaper or online advertising, help wanted signs, job postings) versus the nontraditional (networking, word of mouth, friends- ABC) openings. 5. Students will break into their small groups and be asked to complete their ABC List of networking and discuss in their groups who additional contacts could be for them to help them as they transition into employment or college. 6. Students will regroup as a class and share their ideas. They will keep a copy of their ABC List for personal reference.
7. The counselor will also share how to establish a connection with a new individual for future networking opportunities in the future. (This will be on the handout as well).
Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
Process Data: All student in Grade 11 will participate in this Unit- Lesson 1 of 4. Counselor will take note of students in attendance per class. Perception Data: Knowledge: Percentage of students who can successfully locate job openings in their community. Skills: Percentage of students who can demonstrate professional communication to connect with someone in their network to help them locate employment opportunities. Outcome Data: Increased ability to locate job information. Increased understanding of how to connect with professional contacts to establish network. Follow Up: Counselor will collect post-test data to determine what information students obtained in regards to the job search process.
