RESEARCHING MY IDEA

IDENTIFYING TARGET
AUDIENCE

PRODUCTIONS SIMILAR TO MY
IDEA
From the first focus group that I conducted the main productions
that I could look at to help me with my production are Wallace and
Gromit and The Lego Movie. All of the Wallace and Gromit
productions are stop motion animations and are aimed at families
and children. The Lego Movie is a computer generated animation
and features Lego people, as well as being aimed at children and
families. These productions are good to look at for inspiration
because they have the same target audience as me, as well as
having similar themes in the way that they are made or the style in
which they are created.

AGE
The age of the target audience that I would like to appeal to is children between the ages of 5 and
12. as well as appealing to their parents to make it a more family orientated film like the Lego
Movie and Wallace and Gromit. The Lego Movie has a BBFC rating of Universal, so it is appealing
to children of all ages, whereas Wallace and Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death has a Parental
Guidance rating which is the same rating as I am going to have in my production, which means
that it is suitable for most children, but the parents should watch it first and decide for themselves
whether it is appropriate for their young children. The reason that I have chosen this age group is
because the narrative of my trailer has quite a lot of brutal content because there are a lot of
murders within the town. However I plan on making these scenes obvious about what has
happened, but not actually show any of the characters being killed. This way it can appeal to the
younger audience of the 5 year olds, but still be just grown up enough to appeal to the 12 year
olds too. The use of Lego characters in my animation makes the production have more of an
innocent feel, so it is going to be quite a simple process to make my production appeal to my
target age. The toy Lego that I will be using in my production will be the better construction Lego
which has a minimum age of 4 years old because it contains small parts. Since 4 year olds are in
my target audience it may encourage them to get their own Lego and create their own worlds. So
the materials that I am using in my production are appropriate for the age of my target audience.

GENDER
The gender that I am aiming my production at is both females and
males. Lego is predominantly a male toy but the narrative of the film
can appeal to both genders, especially since it is aimed to be watched in
a family environment. I will also include male and female characters in
my production in order for there to be relatable characters to both
genders. This is similar to the Lego movie because there is a main male
character, but there is also a strong female co-star who helps the main
character all the way through the film. So there is a strong role model
for both genders who watch the production. As there isnt going to be a
specific main character in my production, I will just include a relatively
even split in the characters that I have in my trailer.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROUPING
I think that my production can appeal to all socio-economic
groups from E-A because it is a family film that can be
watched by anyone, and people from all of these groups are
likely to have children. So it is an all round film with no
prejudices towards any social group. This is the same with
both the Lego Movie and all of the Wallace and Gromit
productions.

LIFESTYLE
The lifestyle that I am appealing to with my target audience is
families. A standard family lifestyle where everyone sits down
together to watch a film that is suitable for everyone. So families
with young children that are in primary school is the best
representation of who my film is going to be aimed at. It can be
for single parents as well as married families, since the main
target audience is children. So as long as it is a family
environment and a family lifestyle, then my production can
appeal to them. The film itself has a completely different
lifestyle to this since there are no children in it. But the Lego
movie and the Wallace and Gromit films dont show any signs of
there being a strong family environment, so I can follow this
theme while still appealing to my target audience.

LOCATION
The location of my target audience is the United Kingdom and the United States of
America because I think that these are the best places to release my film because I
am most likely to make it a big hit. This is because my production is an English
speaking production, so it has to be shown in countries that can understand it, as
well as being a narrative that people from both these large areas are likely to enjoy.
Since there are families all over the world it doesnt matter if the people in these
areas live in the countryside or the cities because they will be able to have access to
it wherever they go because technology is very wide spread in this generation. It is
also best to appeal to a western market because we have accessibility more luxury
toys like Lego, whereas a middle eastern market is a lot less likely to because there
is a lot more poverty in their area of the world. So many of them will not have access
to Lego as it is quite an expensive toy, 650 assorted bricks costing 45.36 on
Amazon. So this expensive product is a lot more likely to be known in the western
area of the world, so it is the best place to show my production as it is more wealthy.

AUDIENCE FIGURES

FIGURES FOR THE LEGO MOVIE

On the opening weekend of the Lego Movie in the USA it brought in
$69,050,279 in 3775 screens across the USA. In the UK it brought in
8,051,140 in 547 screens across the UK. The production cost $60,000,000
to produce and made that amount back in the first weekend of viewing in
the USA, here is a graph to show how well it did in the box office. So as you
can see, the
production overall brought in over
$250,000,000 in the USA alone, making the
Lego
Movie a very formidable competitor
to my production.

FIGURES FOR WALLACE AND GROMIT

A MATTER OF LOAF AND DEATH
This production is a TV film so there are actual figures of the amount of
people that watched the film when it was aired on BB1 on Christmas day in
2008. the production drew in 14.4 million viewers for the 30 minute film
which made it the most viewed program on TV at the time slot that it was
shown in. this meant that more of half the people that were watching TV on
Christmas day tuned in to watch this stop motion animation production.
Rotten Tomato has given it a rating of 76% and 3.8 out of 5. So this
production is also a big rival to compete with, even though it may not have
been shown in the cinema. If another production like it were to come out
then it may deter people from going to the cinema to see my production.

HOW WILL I CREATE THIS

AMOUNT OF INTEREST?
I will create this amount of interest by making my film trailer of a very high standard and making sure
that it has a lot of fast cutting action shots, as well as pauses for comedic lines which will draw in the
attention of the viewer. By making my film trailer really engaging to my audience it may spark enough
interest to make people go to the cinema to see my production. I will also have to look at how to
distribute my film to lots of cinemas across the USA and the UK. Since the Lego Movie was aired in 3775
cinemas in the USA and 547 cinemas in the UK, then I will have to get the approval of other big
production companies to help me with promoting my production to cinemas. So I could ask for help from
Warner Bros who made the Lego Movie, as well as Aardman and DreamWorks. Since it is very hard to
get into the distribution industry, I will need support from big companies. I will also need to do a lot of
advertising for my production, ways that I can do this is by making posters, putting adverts on
billboards, magazine articles, and a Lego Town of Disaster website. The Lego Movie and Wallace and
Gromit both have their own official websites for marketing and advertising their productions. So this

would be a good way to start with the promotion of my film.

RESEARCH INTO
COMPETITORS

MY TWO MAIN COMPETITORS

My main two competitors are The Lego Movie and Wallace and
Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death. The Lego Movie is a top
competitor because it uses Lego characters and sets like I intend
to do in my production, as well as having a target audience like
my own. Wallace and Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death is also
a top competitor because it is a high standard stop motion
animation with a strong narrative that appeals to my target
audience. So both have aspects that are relevant to my
production within them and are likely to cause trouble with the
success of my production because they are both relatively new
productions and have all of the standard requirements for a

THE LEGO MOVIE SIMILARITIES

AND DIFFERENCES
The similarities between my production and
the Lego Movie are:
Both use Lego sets and characters.
The target audience.
Both contain action and comedic scenes.
Characters dressed for their roles in their
civilisations.

Differences between my production and The Lego Movie are:

The narrative.

The locations of the sets.

The look of the characters.

The style of animation used.

Thehas

of the story. special
The Lego Movie is a child-friendly, family film which is about how one construction worker who
about him at all becomes special because he believes in himself. The style of animation used for the production is
computer generated animation, so It is very different to my stop motion technique. The film is set in a city but has
different worlds that they travel to throughout the film, and there is a bad character called Professor Business who
wants the world that he owns to go just the way he wants it to by making them follow instructions and eventually
going mad and sticking everything down with superglue. It has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 8.1 out of 10 and a 96%
success rating, as well as it bringing in 8,051,140 in the opening weekend in the UK.

A MATTER OF LOAF AND DEATH

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
Similarities between my production and A Matter of
Loaf and Death are:
Stop motion animations.
Target audience.
Parts of the narrative are similar.
Some locations used.
Sets are built for production.

Differences between my production and A Matter of Loaf and Death are:

My models arent made from modelling clay and armatures.

The storyline as a whole.

The way that the characters move around.

Wallace and Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death is about a psychotic woman who used to be
the star of a baking companys adverts but ate too much bread and became to fat to keep
doing it, so she takes her revenge out on bakers by seducing them and then killing them. She
has murdered 12 bakers before she seduces the main character, Wallace, and it is Gromit
who stops her from killing him. The production is a stop motion animation made from
modelling clay and armatures, with its sets made specifically for the production, so there is
little to no green screening used. The production drew in over 14 million people when it was
aired for the first time, which made it the most viewed show on TV, this makes it a very

RESEARCH INTO
MARKET

DOES THE MARKET NEED A

PRODUCTION LIKE MINE?
After the Lego Movie hit the cinemas it was a massive success and has been
watched by millions of people and brought in over 8 million in the first weekend.
Since my production is going to feature Lego characters and sets I think that it
could also be successful because of the hype over my competitor. People from our
target audience would be interested to see my production because it has similar
aspects to the Lego Movie but with a completely different narrative and animation
technique. So because there is a high chance of my production being successful, I
think that the film industry does need a production like mine because it has the
potential to bring in a lot of income to the industry and even the possibility of
merchandise and special features if it does make it big. My production also has
the potential to bring in Lego fanatics who love the toy and want to see how it has
been created in real life with the use of stop motion. This is where I have the
upper hand over the Lego Movie because I use actual Lego bricks and characters
which is likely to make the Lego fans of the west come and see my production.

WHAT MAKES MY PRODUCTION

UNIQUE?
My production is unique because:
There are no stop motion animation films that feature Lego characters
and sets.
My narrative is unique because there arent any childrens films that are
about a town which has a mafia, law enforcement, serial killers, and old
war veterans, so my characters and storyline have not been used in a
production before.
The locations used are unique because I will have built them myself and
they will be unlike any other set that has appeared in a major production
film.
