ThiscertifiesthatAlainGuedeshascompletedtherequired20servicehoursrequiredfor
successfulcompletionofENG6010.

DiversityframedmyexperienceintheWRT.Notjustculturalandlinguisticdiversity,
whichcertainlyplayedacentralrole,butmoresodiversityinwriterability,academicdiscipline,
andmotivation.IonlytutoredtwostudentswhosefirstlanguagewasEnglish.Ididnttutora
singlestudentfrommyconcentrationsinEnglishorhistory.Icertainlyneverworkedonthe
sameassignmenttwice,andIneverhadstudentsfromthesameclass.Ilearnedabouteverything
fromwindshieldwiperstothehistoryofspiritualityinnursing.TheWRTistheonlyplaceIve
everspokenFrenchoncampus.BeforeIstartedtutoringIhadanotionthatIdbeworkingona
lotoffiveparagraphpapers,orinotherwords,thepapersIknewhowtowrite.Actually,I
helpedwriterswithlabreports,ethnographies,onepageexecutivesummaries,andevena
dissertation.Iworkedwithwriterswhohaddifficultieswithlowerorderissueslikesubjectverb
agreementandwriterswhoreallystruggledwithhigherorderissueslikeorganizationandscope.
Forme,themostimportantthingIlearnedtutoringintheWRTwashowessentialitisto
beflexible.ItwassortofsurprisingtomehowIneededtocallonallaspectsofmyeducation,
bothpersonalandacademic,toadapttoeachsituationandsupporteachwriteraccordingly.My
knowledgeofromancelanguageshelpedmediscoveragrammarissuethatwasplaguinga
speakerofPortuguese.Acrudeunderstandingofmechanicshelpedanengineerfleshoutanidea
foramotorhewasdesigning.Ihelpedastudentwithanethnographyusingamuseumsonline
catalogue.IgenuinelydidthinkthatmostoftheworkIdbedoinginthewritercenterwould
focussedonwritingmechanicsandorganizationasIhadknownthem,butacquiringabasic
understandingofthevarietyofdisciplineswentalongwayinnotonlyestablishingaworking
relationshipwithwriters,butinactuallyfiguringouthowtobestsupporttheirwritingfroma
technicalstandpoint.
OnepointtheBedfordGuidemadewasthatthetaskofwritingapapercanbedaunting.I
reallygotasenseofthatintheWRT.Writerswouldcomeinflusteredorsoundingreally
concerned.Imreallyreluctantaboutdiscussinghowrewardingitcanfeeltoseethedifference

intheirattitudestowardstheirwritingwhentheyfirstcameintothewritingcomparedtotheir
attitudeswhentheyleft,butwhetherornotIactuallygavethemsoundtechnicaladviceorhelped
writersearnabettergradeperhapsthemostimportantthingabouttutoringisthatyoure
mitigatingthatfear.Writingapaperdoesnotneedtobeasoloordeal.Youcanandshouldask
forhelp.ItriedtoimpressthisoneverystudentinallmyclassesiftheWRTcameup.Frankly
ImembarrassedIhaventmadeanappointmentformyself.Oneofmyfavoritethingsabout
genretheoryistheideathatwritingisasocialendeavour,andmyexperienceintheWRT
definitelyreflectedthat.
WithregardstoprojectthreeIthoughtaboutthekindsofquestionsIdbeaskingstudents
intheWRTandwhatkindsofquestionsIdbeaskingstudentsontheprojectthreeassignments.
Questionsthatreflectedtherhetorical,situational,andsocialaspectsofwritingworkedbothin
theWRTandprojectthree.
