Lesson
Collecting and organising data different ways.

Warm Up Activity :

Using the class and

in
a
group
discussion, students
are asked a range of
questions regarding
students. i.e How
many
girls,
how
many boys?
How
many
have
blonde hair?
The teacher records
this information on
the board using tally
marks.

Tuesday

(1 hour)

Resources

Teacher uses the data that was collected on the

board to introduce the concept of collecting data.
Teacher talks about how the information is
categorised.
Teacher introduces tables and how they are used,
how they help to organise and display data.
As a class the students and teacher work together
to input and organise the data into a table.
Discuss any misunderstanding that the students
may have and address questions.
Students are given containers containing different
coloured markers.
Students are informed that they need to collect and
organise the data regarding the markers.
Teacher poses questions to generate thinking about
how students will categorise the data/ markers
Students will collect and organise the data and
record in a table.
Give students an opportunity to engage with other
students and collect data on their own. Students
must choose to collect and record data in regards to
one of two options on the board

Column graphs

Warm up activity:

Recap on lesson
one:

Teacher will prompt

students
thinking
and get them to ask
questions in regards
to what they learnt
in lesson 1.
What is a table?

Students will be asked to take out their maths books

and refer to the table that they worked on from lesson
1.
Using the interactive whiteboard, Teacher will introduce
to the students what a column graph is.
Students will be asked if they know that it is, where they
have maybe seen them, what they are used for (make
connections to the real world).
As a class the student will analyse the example of a
column graph and will identify and label the features of

Recap on
previous lesson
and what has
already been
taught
Students and
Teacher will engage
in a class discussion
and recap on
previous lesson.
Teacher will prompt
students thinking by
asking the following
questions:
What types of data
can we collect and
organise using lists,
tables and different
types of graphs that
we have learnt
about?

Thursday

9.00-10.30

Deconstruct
word problem

(1.5 hour)

On the whiteboard,
write a word
problem. As a class,
students need to
identify the data
that is needed to be
collected and

the graph to help student better understand how data is

input and how to read a column graph.
Teacher will hand out a work sheet that relates to the
example. Students will complete the work sheet and
submit for marking to see if concepts are being
understood.
Students will then use the data collected from lesson
one (different hair colours) and create a column graph.

Pencils

Coloured pencils

Picture graphs

Using the data that was collected in lesson one, Teacher

will use this as an example to introduce the new
concept of picture graph.
Teacher and students will engage in a class discussion
about what they think is a picture graph. Teacher will
make reference to the data that has already been
collected and show how they same information can be
used and turned into a picture graph.
Discuss what the features are of a picture graph and
how they can be similar to a column graph.
Teacher will give students a work sheet and students
are to answer the questions, collect and organise data
and input into a picture graph. This will be done in their
maths books.
Collect for marking and to ensure that the new concepts
are being understood and see if there are any areas
that need to be revisited or if there are any
misconceptions.

Worded questions and collecting and graphing

data using maths book and ICTs
Using the interactive whiteboard and template of word

problem, as a class discuss and identify the

data/information that is needed to be collected and
organised.
Organise the data into a table.
Once the data has been collected and put into a table,

discuss which type of graph would be the most

appropriate to display/ input the data.
As a class do a 30 minute tutorial on how to use ICTs to
create different types of tables and graphs.
Hand out work sheet and get students to read the
worded questions, collect and organise the data and
students are to use laptops to create tables and
particular graphs (as outlined and instructed to do on
the work sheet).
