Fourth Grade
Recorder Composition Performance
Grade Level: Fourth Grade
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate proper playing technique
2. Students will be able to play B A G on the recorder
3. Students will be able to play simple rhythms on the recorder
Materials:
Recorders (one for each student)
Windsong series book 1
Procedure:
1. Review ground rules!
a. No playing unless otherwise directed
b. If a student plays when they are not supposed to, I will take
away the recorder for a set amount of time
i. Repeated offenses means removal from the group
c. Review practice/chin position
d. Whenever I say recorders on laps I expect each student to put
their recorder in their laps
e. Each student is allowed to take their recorders home, however if
you forget your recorder at home ONCE then you cannot take it
home anymore (and you have to play the gross recorder)
2. Review proper playing technique
a. Demonstrate the sound that happens if you overblow
b. Demonstrate the sound that happens if you underblow
c. Inform class that you want to be somewhere in between those
two sounds
d. Inform class on proper holding technique (left hand on top, right
hand on bottom)
3. Recorder Warm-ups
a. Long tones on B
i. Hold for four beats off for four
ii. Half notes for four beats, off for four
iii. Quarter notes for four beats, off for four
iv. *possibly* Eighth notes for four beats, off for four
b. Echo rhythms on B
4. Bonnie Bee Review
a. Pull up Bonnie Bee on smartboard
b. Ask students to come up and name each note
c. Play Bonnie Bee
5. Independent composition work
a. Break students up into groups

b. Continue work on compositions


c. Remind students of proper practice technique/rules for
practicing.
6. Recorder performances
a. Inform students on what a good audience member looks like
b. Have groups come up and perform compositions
Assessment:
Teacher will listen to students for pitch accuracy. (group assessment)
Teacher will assess each students rhythmic accuracy. (individual
assessment)
Teacher will assess students recorder technique. (group assessment)
Evaluation:
1. Were students able to demonstrate proper playing technique?
