VOCABULARY: Vocab Slap!

SUMMARY OF WHY THIS
PLAN SHOULD BE USED/
WHAT NEEDS IT MEETS

This is a game for you and your student to play together to practice new
vocabulary words that we are learning in school! This is a game you can play
with your whole family. You will need index cards and a marker to make the
cards for this game. This game helps your student show their understanding
and comprehension of the meaning of new vocabulary words and it helps
them practice defining new vocabulary using their own words.

STANDARD

1.L.4.a Use sentence level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or

phrase.

OBJECTIVE

Student will be able to identify a word based on hearing the definition and also
be able to define new vocabulary using his or her own words.

INSTRUCTIONAL INPUT
(TEACHING THE SKILL)

Start by reviewing your students vocabulary list sent home from school with
your student. Using your marker, write each word on a separate index card.
Start with 15 vocabulary words, and adjust to more or less words depending
on your students ability level. Read the words aloud with your student. Model
how you would read a word aloud and define it using your own words. What
does the word mean to you? Model using the word in a sentence to show
understanding and also model defining the word in your own way.

GUIDED PRACTICE
(PRACTICING THE SKILL
TOGETHER)

Next, ask your student to practice defining a word in their own way. Once it is
clear that they understand this concept, you are ready to play the game. The
game is more fun if you are able to play with more people, so encourage
siblings or another parent to play along with you! Place the cards with the
vocabulary words on a table out in front of you. Take turns giving the definition
of a word, without actually saying the word itself. After someone gives a
definition, the other players will race to slap the card with the word that
matches the definition. If the person slaps the correct word, they keep the
card. If they slap the incorrect word, the other players can try again to slap the
correct word. The player with the most cards or correct word/definition

matches once the table is cleared wins!

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Because this is a game, there is not an opportunity for independent practice.

But if you feel that after the game your student is still struggling to define
certain words, reteach the skill and play the game with fewer words on the
table, focusing on the words they are having trouble with.

ASSESSMENT

As you play the game, keep a tally of how many words your student accurately
defines or matches to a given definition. If you are playing with 20 words,
matching 16 of the words correctly would show mastery of the skill.

LIST OF ADDITIONAL WAYS

THIS PLAN COULD BE USED

This is a game that can be used to practice many different skills. This game
would be especially good for math fact practice. Write numbers on the index
cards and say a math equation out loud. The first player to slap the number
that represents the correct answer to the equation keeps the card.
