Revised 1/2/2015

Peer Instruction
SUBJECT
Mathematics 8th Grade
DATE(S)
Fall 2015
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to explain why slope m is the same through any two points by
using similar triangles (AA Similarity and parallel lines cut by a transversal)
CALIFORNIA COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS
Content:
8.EE 6. Use similar triangles to explain why slope m is the same between any two
points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx +
b for a line interception the vertical axis at b.
Standards for Mathematical Practice:
MP1 Make sense of problem and perseveres in solving them.
MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4 Model with Mathematics.
MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
ELA/ELD STANDARDS:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.7: Integrate quantitative or technical

information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information
expressed visually.
ELD Standards: Collaborative, Interpretive, Connecting & Condensing
Ideas.

LESSON INTRODUCTION
Video Lesson on www.learnzillion.com with code LZ1472 AND LZ1473.
Then review the idea of slope. Slope is often described as the steepness of a line
(the steeper the line, the greater the slope). Remind students that they can
calculate the slope of a line by dividing the vertical change between two points by
the horizontal change between those same two points (more simply, rise/run).
LESSON ACTIVITIES
Overview: Students will work in small groups to create, design, present, and review
a digital lesson.
The screencast will be 3 to 5 minutes long on the given topic.
In groups of 4, select one of the 4 graphs provided. Students will download the
Graph or Sketch it on their own. Students will then select points on the line and
Sketch out 2 similar triangles. Students will video/screencast themselves
throughout the process. Students will derive the slope using the 2 similar triangles
drawn and show step-by-step process of solving. The final answer will be provide
the linear equation in slope intercept form: y = mx + b. Student will voice over
their recording to explain the process after.
Distribution of work:

Sketching, Recording, Filming, and Explaining

LESSON CLOSURE
Students video presentation will be shared with the class. Other groups will
provide verbal and written feedback base on the rubrics.
ASSESSMENT (FORMATIVE AND/OR SUMMATIVE)
-

Screencast presentation in groups.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

-

Students will be paired strategically to help foster the students development

in both the content and English language.
Webpage will be set up for possible use of Google translate.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

-

Accommodations will be made according to students IEP.

Possible accommodation include audio recording of the lesson.
