Ma. Nina Corazon C. Ceniza, Academic Coordinator of the College of Nursing
attended a Workshop on Instructional Materials Development last January 28-29, 2014 held at the Center of Continuing Education, VSU, Baybay City, Leyte. The 2 day event was spearheaded by the Online Programs Office and Office of the Vice President for Instruction. The format for writing materials such as study guides and course syllabi were discussed as well the requirements and the process of publication in the university. Different IMs (instructional materials) were clearly defined and contrasted. Teaching guides are intended for use by the teachers while instructional modules are designed for students and served as handouts. On the other hand, workbooks provide a more interactive and highly participative learning while laboratory manuals serve as guide for the laboratory experiments and exercises. Moreover, in writing the course syllabus as the basis of learning, the following components have to be included: time frame of the lesson, content, specific objectives, references and materials, teaching and learning strategies, evaluation and assessment tools and the code link. The latter applies to courses based on actual CHED Memorandum Order. It was also added that stating objectives must focus on higher order thinking skills in Blooms taxonomy and have to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bounded. Furthermore, instructional modules must contain the unit number and title, lesson summary of 2-3 sentences, a springboard question for leaning that will serve as challenge, lesson objectives, teaching strategies, discussion or content, instructions to submit the answers to questions, additional. Before an IM could be published, requirements have to be met and will follow a review protocol set by the institution. Authors should follow the format and style prescribed by the university. Only one set of IM for one course will be considered for evaluation and publication, which means all instructors in team teaching have collaborate to produce one IM for the subject to avoid duplication and inconsistencies.
