I have learned to view digital tools with a critical eye especially as it pertains to safety of
students. It requires seeing beyond the glitz and really poking around in the fine print.
Learning how to analyze tools with Hengstlers tool risk assessment will assist me in my
ventures as an online educator and a purveyor of fine social media tools. The specific OLTD
program outcomes this evidence reflects are:
Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate
environment and the learner
Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in OL learning
Consider responsibility, accountability and civility in OL environments
Demonstrate basic competency with design and implementation within a variety of
OL learning environments and tools
The program outcomes achieved with this evidence marks a pinnacle of knowing for me.
This exercise has demonstrated how to question or solidify judgment on social media tools
but by extension all activities considered for OL education. I have a better understanding of
the underpinnings of why a tool is suitable or not for a specific task. Achieving these
outcomes has allowed me a competence with an important aspect of OL teaching.
