Dear Parents,

www.srbecker.blogspot.com

In sixth grade, we have been working on a unit that explores the rooms of a house. You
might ask why the rooms of the house are important to learn. Here are a few reasons:
When staying in unfamiliar surroundings, it is important to know which rooms to
enter, or not to enter. Imagine the embarrassment that could occur by walking
into the wrong room.
To provide for basic human needs, its important to be able to locate the
bathroom.
The home is already familiar to everyone, so connecting learning to previous
knowledge makes learning deep and powerful.
Additionally, as part of this unit, students will learn directions.
This helps to navigate when a person is unfamiliar with his or her surroundings.
As your childs language teacher, it is not only my duty to teach vocabulary and
concepts, I also try to foster study skills so that your child is better prepared when he or
she enters middle school, no matter what language she or he takes.
In class, every student was given four sticky notes. On each sticky note, the child was
asked to write one of the rooms of the house that we have been learning. For
homework, when the student returns home, he or she should place each sticky note in
the corresponding room in the students own home. Every time the student enters that
room, the student should look at the sticky note.
This addresses the National Standards for World Language Learning, 5.1: Students
use the language both within and beyond the school setting.
So that I know this was accomplished, please sign this sheet above and have your child
bring this sheet to school on the due date, written above. A parent signature is required.
This sheet and all accompanying documents for this unit can be found on my blog.
Gracias,
Seor Becker
