Lakota People
Lakota people are from Northern great planes. They are part of the Sioux tribe. Sioux is
short for nadouessioux, which means snake. This pronunciation is one of the rare ones that is
pronounced the same in English as it is in Native. However some argue that Sioux means big
rattle instead of snake. It still has the same meaning to most, the name basically stands for
bravery and being courageous. (http://www.dream-catchers.org/lakota-history/)
This band lived in a very land area that had a lot of threat, like heat, or certain animals so
they did need to be brave. They never really lived in an area where living was simple in terms of
animals around them. However their lives were simple lived. They had to be brave because there
were lots of dangerous animal , but they were not too serious about life. Which is interesting
because most areas where people have to be careful of other animals. They are very serious
people that never stop and smell the roses. (http://www.dream-catchers.org/lakota-history/)
Geographic location by the Mississippi river. Near Texas and New Mexico. There are also
Sioux reservations in North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Minnesota and Canada. There is also a
reservation named Rosebud Sioux which is located in the northwest corner of Nebraska. The
Lakota are one of twenty nations inside its reservation some of the other nations include ideal,
winner and butte creek. There were a lot of opportunities for the Lakota maintain a more rural

lifestyle which include. They influenced other tribes they came across to be like them. They were
also teachers and liked helping others. They Taught them some useful things like hunting and
gathering.
.Hunting, gathering, making friends with other bands so they would have more supplies.
Their prime objective was to make friends or allies with other Natives. They lived in the great
planes which went across over 750,000 square miles, it was basically of the land of the great
planes that they lived within, because they were a pretty big tribe. They would sometimes
dance,sing and celebrate things.

Animals Buffalo ,eagle, and lizard . The buffalo represents the bounties and great things of
mother earth. Buffalo is used it many ways. They made clothing out of buffalo and used it
for food. The eagle was believed to protect them, it was a spirit of protection and all
things divine. It also represented being free and courageous. The lizard was believed to
cure the sick, guide them spiritually and represented strength. They would mingle with
other tribes and bands, because they were not scared of much of anyone and thought that
other Indians could help them collect the things they needed in order to survive.

Lakota Indians have five reservations, In Canada and Montana even though they live on these
reservations they follow their own laws and live their own tribal ways. They have their
own political and economic system. They preserve their way of life and train their youth
the moral and beliefs of the tribe. In the 1880 The Lakota Sioux made treaties with the
United States. And were recognized as a sovereign Nation. There are seven original
bands of the Sioux Indians one of the bands is known as the Lakota on march 2nd 1889
the Sioux made s settlement with the u.s congress and since then they have been known

as part of the great Sioux nation.(http://www.indians.org/articles/lakota-indians.html)

Like most Natives they are recognized but a lot of their culture was lost. So even though
they can do cultural practices and are seen as actually Indians they dont know all of
the things their ancestors did. There are also still issues going on about them being taken
seriously. There was actually a resent war declared against them because congress think
they are becoming too large and powerful. So I guess they have no population problem
but theyre dealing with things that should already be done and over with. After all it is
2015 right now people need to be less judge mental and hurtful toward other people. The
congress went into an area in South Dakota and tried to take the land. Well kind of
borrow it without asking. Well the Sioux were of course not happy with it and would not
let them take it so now they are trying to cause problems for them. They also want to send
a pipeline right through their nation, which could cause lots of problem. The land could
get flooded, the land could lose of some of its quality, and they could lose their houses.
Also underestimating treaties they made with them in the past, which is like basically
making an empty promise.
I have learned a lot in this class and about different tribes. There reason I choose this on is
because I thought that all Natives experienced a lot of crap but they seem to stay calm and brave
during all of it. I was also angry learning about this particular tribes because I wasnt educated in
the past about it and I learned interesting stuff. Just angry I didnt learn it earlier in my life. I
think this bad shaped history because other bands looked up to them as brave people. Plus from
most of the things Ive read about them they are considered pretty kind. The world needs more
nice people. Kind people would have shaped history, because a lot of terrible things happened in

history. So nice people would stick out a lot because not everyone is like them then if people are
influenced to be kind everyone benefits from it. Without learning about these Natives I would
have though what was originally taught to me was true. I was taught when I was younger that the
Natives were always ruining things for the pilgrims. I was basically taught they were terrible
people and the pilgrims only did good things. Now I know better from learning about this tribe
and other tribes. This tribes however shows just how false those things that were taught to me
are. I also never knew a lot of the things that were said about this tribe specifically like, that their
name meant snake. Or they were part of the Sioux Nation.
