Cover Letter

Dear Dr. Bruce,

The goal of my cover letter is to demonstrate how I have achieved each student
learning outcome (SLO). I will support these achievements with documents done
throughout the semester. I chose to organize them from my best document to minor
documents.
Since the review article was done towards the end of the semester, I was able to
apply all the writing techniques we have been practicing and therefore this review
became my best work. I chose to include it in my portfolio because I believe it displays
achievement for majority of the SLOs. My review article is formally written for a wide
range of audiences including experts, researchers and non-experts. For example, it
includes writing for non-experts because the introduction defines more difficult terms
such as insulin-like growth factors, estrogens and endometrial cancer. This review
contains good ethical citations in text and out of text as well. I used a citation type,
ASME, that I had never used before which was a challenge but was accomplished with
no mistakes as you can see from your peer review. Persuasion of comparing and
contrasting the results among several journal articles was done well in my review,
especially in the conclusion. For example, the first sentence of my conclusion gives an
overall comparison of the results from hormone concentration levels after consuming
milk All articles have indicated hormone concentrationsincrease after consumption of
milk. One study suggests these hormone concentrations may accumulate over time.
This review was meant to combine results from several articles and not discuss them
one at a time. I accomplished that by comparing and contrasting the results as a whole.
My review article also fits the organization SLO because I used headings and
subheadings that allow readers to easily access information. The review article also
refrains from losing focus by staying on topic of milk consumption and hormone effects.

Lastly, I conclude my review article can also support the language and design SLO. The
review is non-opinionated and therefore does not contain beliefs that would offense
gender and cultural differences.
Since the review article did not support informal writing of the rhetorical focus
SLO, I decided to include a writers notebook entry. This writers notebook entry displays
informal writing because it was freewriting that will not be graded upon punctuation
errors, spelling errors or organization.
The final documents I will include in my portfolio are the peer reviews. I decided
to include these to demonstrate collaboration between professor and student as well as
classmate and student. I achieved this last SLO by taking the constructive criticism from
both you and a classmate to improve my review article. I did so by adding more detail to
the review, making subheadings more clear and combining sentencings to make them
flow more efficiently.
I hope you see that these student learning outcomes were succeeded in my
documents. Just as important, I hope you have seen an improvement in my writing
throughout the semester.

Best Regards,

Amber Myers
