1. Mesrcury lamp:
Describe Spectrum:
We observe a discontinuous spectrum that is made up of a central bright band about white in color
and on each side we have a repeated sequence of discontinuous bands of color as follows as we
move away from the central band:
Violet lighter violet blue green yellow
Green of mercury:
1st Order (Left) = 19 20

(right) 19 30

( avrg )=(19.42 0.04)

2 Order (Left) = 36 55 (right) 42 35
nd

( avrg )=(39.7 1.3)

Calculating wavelength:

n d sin

There are 600 lines/mm so there are 599 slits/mm, therefore

d=1/599 mm, which is 1.6694*10-3 mm (1669.4nm), which
is the separation between the slits of the grating.
(1st order) 555.06 nm
n=dsin , ( 1 ) =dsin=1669.4 sin ( 19.42 )=555.0594 nm

(2nd order) 555.06 nm

1669.4 sin (39.7)

Compare with literature value and comment
First we get the average wavelength and get its rms error then we compare it with the
literature value.
n=dsin , ( 2 ) =dsin=

So the ex perimental value is =( 544 5 ) nm

As for the literature value ,the wavelengththe Hg spectrum corresponds a wavelength of 546.1 nm .
So the literatue valuebelongs 1 error range of the experimental value
exp [539 nm ,549 nm]
so our measurements are an extent accurate

Describe Spectrum:
Here we observe a continuous spectrum of light with no separate band. The bands are
continuous made of the rainbow colors that are in this pattern as we move away from
central band:
Violet Indigo Blue Green Yellow Orange Red

b) Angles measured in the first order:

Extreme red: (right) 24 10
(left) 24

( avrg )=(24.08 0. 04)

Extreme violet: (right) 14 40 (left) 15

( avrg )=(14.91 0.0 4 )

c) Wavelengths:
There are 600 lines/mm so there are 599 slits/mm, therefore
d=1/599 mm, which is 1.6694*10-3 mm (1669.4nm), which
is the separation between the slits of the grating.
Extreme red: (681 60) nm

n=dsin , ( 1 ) =dsin=1669.4 sin ( 24.08 )=681 nm =

Extreme violet: (429 60) nm
