NervousSystemLabReport
AccordingtoHolesHumanAnatomyandPhysiology,NewsMedical,andtheNew
HealthGuidethreefunctionsofthenervoussystemincludesensory,integrative,andmotor
functions.Thissystemofthebodyisaverycomplexorgansystem.Itiscomposedofmany
differentorgans,themaintwobeingthebrainandthespinalcord(NewHealthGuide,2014).
Therearetwodifferentsystemswithinthenervoussystem:theperipheralnervoussystem,and
thecentralnervoussystem(HolesHumanAnatomyandPhysiology).Thepowerhouseofthe
nervoussystemisthebrainwhichcontrolsallkindsofbodyfunctionsfromsighttoapersons
emotions(NewsMedical,2015).Thespinalcordisincontrolofsendingmessagestoother
organs,sotheycancarryoutfunctions(NewHealthGuide,2014).Thispathincludes
informationbeingssenttothespinalcordviaafferentnerves(NewHealthGuide,2014).From
heretheinformation(nervewavesifyouwill)traveltothebodyandbodyorgansthrough
efferentnerves(NewHealthGuide,2014).Howeverthenervoussystemisnotaoneway
conversation.Thebodyalsofunctionsinawaytoletthebrainknowwhensomethingiswrong.
Thisisaccomplishedthroughinformationtravelingfromsensoryreceptorsinthebodyto
afferentnervesthattaketheinformationtothespinalcordandthenstraighttothebrain(New
HealthGuide,2014).

InConclusion,thenervoussystemisaverycomplexorgansystemthatcontrolstheentire
body.Therearetwomainsystemswithinthenervoussystem,andmanymoresubsystemsafter
that.Thecentralnervoussystemconsistsofthebrain,andthespinalcord.ThePeripheral
nervoussystemconsistsofthespinalandcranialnerves,andtheganglia.Othersubsystems
includethesomaticnervoussystemandtheautonomicnervoussystem.Thesomaticcontrolsall
ofthevoluntaryactionsofthebodysuchasmovementofthelimbs.Theautonomicnervous
systemcontrolstheinvoluntaryresponsesofthebodysuchasnerveimpulses,breathing,and
yourheartbeating.Themainpartofthenervoussystemhowever,isthebrain.Itisthe
powerhouse.Assuchthebodyputsmucheffortintoprotectingit.Someoftheseprotections
includethespinalfluid,skull,scalp,andlittleligamentsattachingthebraintotheskullsoit
cannotjustflipover.Thenervoussystemusescelltocellcommunicationtoachieveallofits
functions.Thisisaccomplishedthroughneurons,nervesandtheactionpotential.Theaction
potentialiscausedbyachangeinchargeoftheneuronbypotassiumandsodiumcellschanging
placesontheinsideoroutsideofthecell.Ittravelsthroughtheneuronandintothenervewhich
thentakestheimpulsetoitsdesireddestination.Thisthentriggersabodyfunction.However,in
somecasestherecanbeanoutsidevariablethatinterfereswiththeactionpotentialsuchassome
toxins,medicines,oranesthesias.Manyofthesecancausechangesinapartoftheaction
potentialsuchasthepotassiumchannelsoreventhenerveprotection.Thiscaneithercausean
inabilitytocreateanactionpotentialoraprolongedactionpotential.Neitherofthesearegood.
Theactionpotentialdoesnoteventakeasecondtocompleteandanythingotherthanthatcan
causedamagetopartsofthebody.So,eventhoughthenervoussystemisnotasystemseem
oftenitcouldverypossiblybethemostimportantorgansysteminthebody.
