1. Summarize the long term academic goal for students.


Students will use their knowledge of properties of materials to
create a product that will protect an egg being dropped from 12-15
feet.
2. Describe and explain the process and information used to
create this SLO.
The Properties of Matter pre-assessment quiz was given on April 8th,
2015. According to the results, 84% of the students (16/19) were
approaching the standard, receiving a 2, and 16% had met the
standard, receiving a 3.
3. Describe and explain the student group(s) selected for this
SLO.
The students for this selected SLO are 2nd grade students at Pangborn
Elementary School. A few lessons were taught at the beginning of the
year, focusing on properties of matter. The students were given the
pre-assessment to determine the knowledge they were able to retain
from those lessons. Ability levels for this class vary from below level to
above level. There are 2 ELL students in this class. The class consists
of 19 students.
4. Describe the specific content focus for this SLO.
The focus for my SLO is properties of matter. This genre of properties
correlates with the following Common Core State Standards of Science:
1) 2-PS1-1- Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and
classify different kinds of materials by their observable
properties.
2) 2-PS1-2- Analyze data obtained from testing different materials

to determine which materials have the properties that are best
suited for an intended purpose.

National Geographic Learning: Exploring Science- This book was
used to re-introduce the concept of properties. A discussion was
facilitated about various materials and the properties they possess,
using this book as the focus.
Egg Drop Experiment Pack- Each pair of students received a packet,
and different portions were completed daily throughout the unit.
This packet helped to keep the students moving at a similar pace.
County based electronic resources (PORTAL)- Exit tickets were
developed based on materials/resources found on the portal.
Vocabulary Anchor Chart- New vocabulary words were written on an
anchor chart. The students were told to use a few words from the
anchor chart in their sentences during discussions and exit tickets.

2nd grade team taught this unit over these three days. I
designed the unit with my mentor teacher, and tweaked it after
having various discussions with the other members of the 2nd
grade team.
- STEM night- the students were told that their work would be
showcased during STEM night, where parents and families were
able to come into the school and see their childs work.
