they will be reimbursed for any ministry expenses (i.e. taking a student out
for coffee) for up to $50/month.
The student interns will also participate in a number of UMin staff events,
including after work hours.
Application Process:
Internships are open to any person who will be a college senior or fifth-year
senior during the 14-15 school year and has been involved in leadership in

University Ministries
Student Intern Application
Part 2
Please respond briefly (One page maximum per question) to the following
questions:
1. Please describe your faith journey. Include how God got your attention
and some
significant experiences/people that helped prepare you for this position.
Include your previous and current involvement in University Ministries.
I was introduced to God at a young age, and grew up comfortable with
his concept. My childhood was characterized by knowing that I needed to
want a relationship to God, whatever that meant. I spent my time making
sure I aligned with what it meant to be a Christian because I felt morally
convicted to and because it was part of the value system my parents raised
me with.
Ive talked about my experience as a Freshman a lot within the UMin
community. I acknowledged quickly after that as one of the hardest years of
my life, it was definitely the point at which God grabbed my attention. Now,
two years later, I see clearly the ways in which God used my surrounding
community for that transformation.
I give most credit of the way God transformed my faith to the Inn
community. I became enveloped into it after my trip to Hawaii freshman
year, and although I was invested in a core group at the time, I began to feel
real connection when Janie and others in the administration continued to
pursue real relationship with me. It was at this point I felt pushed to really
reflect on myself and my individuality in God. By being given opportunities
through the Inn to express my faith over the next year, I discovered not only
why I wanted to be pursuing this faith, but why I wanted to articulate it to the
publicwhich I learned to do through Apologetics. Ive always been logically
inclined, and I hadnt really discovered that aspect of faith yet. When I
learned to back up my beliefs with logic and facts, I finally felt justified in
accepting the full truth of Christianity.
I solidified my well-rounded faith in the beginning of Sophomore year
with enthusiasm, and finally felt myself completely open up without doubts.
As a psych major conditioned to observing others, I have always learned God
the most through the people surrounding me. The Inn community provided
an environment in which I saw people in true pursuit of Jesus, and when I
began to follow, I fell in love. After that point, I rapidly began to learn Jesus
and real relationship with him, which was a concept Id never really known.
Currently, in my faith, Im learning the sacredness of community.
Being removed from University Ministries this quarter has made me reflect on
how Ive seen God moving through the community, and Ive felt that he has
put more of a desire than ever in me to invest legitimately in the community
and be a part of fostering it.

2. How does this position fit into your short and long-term goals? What do
you want to get out of this experience? What do you bring to the
University Ministries Team in terms of strengths and weaknesses?
I recently dropped membership to my sorority. I had been feeling
really passionate and called towards leadership in that community all through
my sophomore year. As of junior year, however, I felt it harder to manage
this commitment along with my others (especially Student Leadership at
UMin). I began to see all of these administrative commitments detracting
from what I was truly committed to in my heartrelationships with the
people within these communities. After much thought and prayer, I realized
that I wanted to be able to invest myself fully in the Inn community.
Short term, I am looking to enhance my leadership skills. One of my
strengths so far is balancing relationships. I fill my free time with coffee
dates, (and even now that Im abroad, with skype dates). This is something I
will do regardless of my commitments throughout the next year. What Im
looking for in this internship is the leadership context to back that up. I know
I will be deeply involved with the Inn community next year because I have
decided that is where I want to focus my time. I would love to be able to
legitimize these efforts with the resources to condition my leadership.
I have as of late been considering whether or not to pursue ministry
work in my future. I know I want to be involved in a relational environment,
and I can see God taking my psychology inclination in many different
directions. I would love to get some ministry experience to test out whether
or not I want to pursue this direction more professionally.
I feel I havent really exercised my leadership abilities to their full
potential within the Inn community. I have been blessed with strengths for
both relationship and leadership, and I feel as though God is encouraging me
to take leadership opportunities more seriously next year. My greatest
weakness is the difficulty I have in keeping my commitments. I am a
schedule overload-er, and I know this trait diminishes my efficiency and
effectiveness. I feel this internship would give me an avenue to narrow down
my commitments and learn what it means to focus solely on one.

3. Describe an event or project that you enjoyed being involved in and

contributing to. What about it was enjoyable and what were the less
enjoyable aspects for you?
As a part of the Break Missions student leadership team, I loved being
a part of planning the Honduras trip. Ive done multiple service trips in my
life, and really value the community environment it fosters, and this trip gave
me the opportunity to help create that environment. One of the most
enjoyable aspects for me was the planning of the Bible studies throughout
the trip. The full team consisted of most of my best friends, but being
involved with the planning of the Bible studies helped me to learn focus
outside of the social aspect of the trip. Furthermore, I liked reaching out to
the team members before the trip and learning how to foster team bonding
before arriving in Honduras. My other favorite part about this trip was the
time spent with Chris Sherman, as I got to see every aspect of what goes into
these trips and why he does them. I found it really interesting to be working
with the administration and learning a more intimate level of the purpose
behind them.
The only issues I had with being a part of planning this project was the
time it consumed. I hadnt realized how much preparation went into the trip
beforehand, I felt myself and other leaders werent fully focused on the
preparations, but rather more inclined to wing it at every meeting until we
arrived in Honduras. I discovered the effectiveness of the team environment
outside of the trip but found it hard to commit to that and get others to want
to commit as well.

4. Which of the ministry teams (inn/worship, missions, Greek, YLC/freshmen)

would you prefer if you were chosen for the internship and why?
Ive worked with Greek Team for a couple years now, and feel pretty
capable towards helping to lead that avenue. Although Im no longer
affiliated to a house, I am still very involved in the community and feel really
passionate about sharing what Ive learned from my investment in the Greek
System. Ive seen what works and what doesnt in terms of fostering the
Christian environment within the Greek community, and Im blown away by
the strides it has made in the past few years and would love to be a part of
that future.
That being said, although I have a lot of experience working within the
Greek community, I would also love to work with missions. I really enjoyed
working with the Honduras team, and having the opportunity to learn what
goes into the planning and preparation for these trips. I think the
international environment provides a unique setting to experience Jesus with
others in a new mentality. Being abroad now, Ive learned the difference
between spending time in a community versus investing service and efforts
into a community, and I feel passionate about fostering that mentality in
others. Id love to have the opportunity to learn more about getting invested
in the international community and teaching others about it.
