Name: Abby Moran

Intended Grade Level: 4th

Reading Component: Vocabulary
Directions:
These provided activities all focus on the essential reading
component of vocabulary. Students will be directed to complete choice
board activities in class if they finish assignments early. If students
finish assignments early, they can decide which activity or activities
they would like to complete. They will be instructed to select a book
that interests them and choose ten vocabulary words from that book in
order to complete the activities.
In addition, the students will complete three choice board
activities at least once a quarter prior to a vocabulary quiz. The
students will be provided with a list of vocabulary words that they will
be expected to know and understand. They will be instructed to pick
one activity from the first row (easy-green), one from the second row
(medium-pink) and one from the third row (hard-orange). The activities
will be started in class and completed at home. The students will come
to class prepared for the quiz and will turn their activities in for a
grade. These activities will allow students to learn, understand and
truly grasp the importance of different vocabulary words.

throughout the school year. Due to this fact, its important that

challenge the children but will be suitable for all learners. The
assignments provided are interesting and fun, yet beneficial.

Choice Board Creation:

Activities:
1. Fold a piece of paper in half the long way: put the definition in the
left column and the word that matches the definition in the right
column.
2. Use each vocabulary word in a clever sentence. You should have ten
sentences with one vocabulary word in each sentence.
3. Find and write down a synonym and antonym for each of your
words.
4. Write a short story using your vocabulary words. Make sure that the
story is school appropriate and could potentially be read aloud to the

class.
5. Draw ten different pictures that represent the meaning of your
vocabulary words.
6. Make a bubble map with one of your vocabulary words in the middle.
Add bubbles around the word (at least 5) and fill the different bubbles
with words that are associated with your vocabulary word. (Do this
activity for 5 out of your 10 words; therefore, you should have 5
different bubble maps)
7. Write a song using the vocabulary words. Make sure that the words
are used effectively so that the reader will be able to understand the
meaning of these words.
8. Create a game using your vocabulary words. Make sure that the
game is school appropriate and that other students would be able to
play your game. Include a set of directions that instruct someone how
to play the game as well.
9. Use one vocabulary word in a short rhyming poem. Make 5 different
poems in which each poem contains a vocabulary word. OR challenge
yourself to include 5 vocabulary words in one rhyming poem.
