Persuasive Essay Assignment

Fahrenheit 451 Essay

90% of Americans own some sort of computerized gadget whether it is a
smart phone or a computer (CNN). Technology is not only an issue in the book
Fahrenheit 451, but also in our world today. In the book Fahrenheit 451, there are
many problems that are results of technology. This essay will be mainly addressing
two problems that are not only affecting the society of Fahrenheit 451, but also our
world today. The first issue that I will be arguing is over-watching TV, and the
second issue that has come to my concern is things moving too fast.

It is shown that the average American watches about 5 hours of TV daily (NY
Times). Can you believe that? That is one of the main reasons I have decided to
address my solution to the issue, over-watching TV. In the society of Fahrenheit 451,
all of the citizens are drawn to the parlour walls. This is because they are able to
portray anything a person could ever want without even having to get up. It is a
problem because people then arent going outside and being active like they should
be doing. Mildred and her friends are perfect examples of how drawn the people in
Fahrenheit 451 become to the parlour walls. For example, The three women
fidgeted and looked nervously at the empty mud-colored walls, pg. 45. This quote

shows that the Mildred and her friends became so dependent on the parlour to be
their second family, that they became uneasy when it was unplugged. I have
witnessed examples in real life too. For instance, when I come across people who
would rather sit and watch their favorite show then, go outside and be active. There
is a solution that I came up with that is focused on reminding others, and myself the
benefits there are to going outside. Whenever I see someone who looks like their
eyes are drawn to the TV screen, I will inform them of the effects of over-watching
TV and offer them the idea to go outside/exercise outdoors. This does not only apply
to others, but also to myself when I am watching TV. This solution will make things
better because, people will realize how healthy it is for them to embrace nature and
enjoy the outdoors.

People in the world in Fahrenheit 451 and in our world today experience
things moving too fast. By that, I mean people are not taking the time to slow down
and enjoy the present. This isnt just a result of the speed limit raising, but also a
result of people wanting to spend more time with technology. They are just always
thinking about doing things fast and arent taking time to observe. Throughout the
book Fahrenheit 451, it is noticeable that things are always moving very fast.
Especially when Clarisse explains how her family member was arrested for being a
pedestrian. The following piece of evidence proves that people enjoy driving as fast
as they can go/only walk to places they have to go to, because it is relaxing to them
and its the only thing they know, I always like to drive fast when I feel that way.
You get up around 95 and you feel wonderful, pg. 31. This is noticeable in real life

to, for example, almost everyone thinks of things too fast and they dont really slow
things down enough. By people, including myself, moving too fast, we miss some of
the most beautiful things that this world has to offer. The solution that is most
effective is to just remind myself when I feel like I am thinking about things that
arent necessary and are in the future, to just stay in the present.

In conclusion, technology takes up most of our world today, and almost every
American owns something electronical. From now on, I will make sure to input my
solutions to these two problems into my own life. They will help solve these issues
present in my life, and the lives of others. People will become more educated about
this issue and want to improve. Overall, if both these issues continue, then our world
will become un-active and technology obsessed. Therefore people need to realize
whats happening and take action on the problem. Which includes simply going
outside and taking things slower in life.
