Castro Breaks Ties with the U.S.


And joins with the Soviets

The United States welcomed in the seemingly


democratic Cuba.
However Fidel Castro changed all of that by
strengthening ties with the Soviet Union.

The Cuban citizens were not thrilled with the


change.
In fact a lot of Cuban citizens fled the country in
fear of the strong ties the country had with the
Soviets.

The Bay of Pigs Disaster

The United States Government backed a group


of Cuban exiles who invaded Cuba.
The invasion was approved from President
John F. Kennedy

President Kennedy did not give the invaders air


support from the U.S. Military.
Most of the Cuban population also did not
support the invasions.

Soviet Missile Crisis

The soviet union tried to install medium ranged


missiles that were capable of hitting the United
States.
President Kennedy Threatened an attack if the
missiles weren't taken down.

Later in 1977 the US resolved to establish


limited relations with Cuba making it easier for
US citizens to visit the country.

Castro Announces Retirement

Fidel Castro was forced to retire a little over a


year after he had emergency intestine surgery.
The nation of Cuba was shocked at the news of
Castro's retirement.

This came Castro's 49 year leadership to a


screeching halt.
Raul Castro, Fidel's brother took the helm after
Fidel.

Cuban's begin winning small


freedoms

In Febuary of 2008 the United Nations allowed


the Cuban citizens fair wages, education, and
social security.
They were also granted the right to work.

In 2009 the US decided to lift the restrictions in


Cuba

Cuba takes steps toward new leader

In late April of 2011 Cuba made a move toward

allowing Jose Ramon Machado to fill the 2
highest position in the Communist party.

Recently new laws have been passed


Some changes such as the privilege for Cuban
citizens to sell and buy cars and also sell and
buy real estate has been implemented

Pope Makes Long-Awaited Visit

In 2012 Pope Benedict XVI visited the land of


Cuba.
This came in hopes of settling tensions
between the Cuban Government and the
Catholic Church.

Folks from as far as Miami attended the Mass.


Some Cuban people felt pressured by their
employer to attend the mass.

Exit Visa Requirement is Dropped

In 2012 Cuba dropped the exit visa rule.


This meant that citizens did not need to show a
visa when leaving the country.

The new policy allows cubans to leave the


country for vacations or forever
After the citizen is not in the country for a 2 year
time period the citizenship is taken away.

Cuba Resumes Diplomat


relationship with America

When the Cuban government released prisoner


Alan Gross, President Obama announced that
the US would be resuming full diplomatic
relations with Cuba.

The two leaders met to discuss how they could


restore a 5 century dissagreement.
Cuban cigars are now allowed to be brought
into the U.S. As of earlier in 2015.

What Could come between the U.S.


And Cuba in the Future
In my point of view I think the Cuba and United
States relationship is changing greatly. I feel that
it is a positive relationship for both countries. In
one aspect it will help the economies of both
countries. For example neither countries before
were allowed to buy or sell anything to each other
and now we can enjoy some of the same things
they can buy there, and the same for them. It
could also give people the chance to see loved
ones freely as they couldnt before. And finally
this brings the United States closer to helping
Cuba become a democratic country.
