GIRTONCOCURRICULUM

TheCoCurriculumprogramatGirtonGrammarprovidesourstudentswithopportunitiesforpersonalgrowth
throughavarietyofexcellentactivities.Involvementinthecocurriculumallowsstudentstobuildfriendships
and develop team work with other Girton students; this relationship with students, teachers and parents
withintheGirtonCommunitydevelopsapositiveconnectednesstotheschool.Overtimestudentsdevelop
theirleadershipskillsthroughopportunitieswhichexisttocoachormanagejuniorteams.

AtGirtonGrammarSchool,ourcocurricularactivitiesfromYearsPreparatorytoTwelvecaterforstudents
with a range of interests. We have eighteen separate sporting activities with some, such as netball and
volleyballcateringformorethantwentyteams.Wehaveavarietyofleadershipactivities,communityservice
andavastassortmentofopportunitiesinthePerformingArts;rangingfromorchestrasandchoirs,actors
studioandproductionsthroughtojazzandclassicalballet.

Currently we offer approximately sixty cocurricular activities from which the students can choose. These
activitiesareofferedinthefollowingsections:

PerformingArts

EachcocurricularactivityhasastaffmemberasitsManagerinCharge(MiC).Someactivities,particularlythe
team sports, also have coaches, student leaders, and team managers. Students in the Senior School who
achieveexcellenceinthecocurriculumareeligibletobeawardedwithColours,inrecognitionoftheirskills
andcontributionstotheactivity.

We welcome parents who would like to assist as a coach and encourage you to contact the Head of Co
curriculum,MrSlaterforfurtherinformation.

GirtonGrammarSchoolrequiresallstudentstobeinvolvedinatleasttwococurricularactivities,oneofwhich
maybecommunitybased.

TheinclusionofacommunitybasedactivityintheGirtonCocurriculumhasbeenanewadditionfrom2012.
Furtherdetailsareincludedatthebottomofthepage.

AIMSOFTHECOCURRICULUM:

Provisionofanenvironmentwherethepastoralcareofstudentsisparamount

Provisionofcaringteacherswhohavethevisionandleadershiptoassistinthedevelopment
ofeachstudenttoattaintheirbestandtobecomefinecitizens

Provisionofadiversebutsustainablerangeofactivitiesinsport,thearts,hobbies,outdoor
education,serviceandleadership.

Allstudentsareinvitedtosampleabreadthofactivities.Whileitisnotcompulsoryforstudentstoundertake
anyonetypeofactivity,itisrecommendedstudentsinvolvethemselvesinmultipleactivitiesduringtheirtime
atGirton,includingtheopportunitytoassumeleadershiproleswithintheseactivities.

COMMUNITYBASEDACTIVITIES
StudentswillbeabletouseaCommunitybasedactivityiftheysatisfythefollowingcriteria:

Beinvolvedintheactivityatleastonceaweek

Receivecoaching(ifaphysicalactivity)

ApplydirectlytotheHeadofCoCurriculum

Awrittenapplicationmustbeprovidedbyparentsandtheactivity/sportsleaderpriortoacceptanceof
theactivityaspartofthecocurriculum

CommunityActivity
Studentsinvolvedinasport/activityintheirlocalcommunity.

Theinvolvementinthelocalcommunityisimportantandwedonotwantstudentstobeinvolvedin
theGirtoncocurriculumattheexpenseofbeingconnectedtothelocalcommunity.Studentsmust
submitasignedformtoMr.Slaterexplainingtheircommitmenttotheactivity(time,training,goals
andachievements)andaskforittobecountedasaCommunityInvolvementActivity(C.I.A.).Students
mustreapplyeachyear.Thisformwillbemailedtoallnewstudents;currentstudentscanlocatethe
form on the Girton Portal. If a student demonstrates a serious commitment to their community
sport/activityitwillbeconsideredpartoftheGirtoncocurriculum.Theapplicationmaybesubjectto
approvalbytheHeadmaster.
ForastudenttoselectoneCommunitybasedactivitytheymustalreadybeenrolledinacurrentGirton
cocurriculumactivity.

ActorsStudioisthetermgiventotherehearsalstageofGirtonsOneActPlayFestival.Studentsformsmall,
selfdirectedgroupsanddevelopashortperformance.TheythenenterintotheFestivaltoperformfor
parentsandfriendsandtobejudgedbyapanel.Theworkpresentedshouldbeentirelydevelopedbythe
studentswithstaffsimplysupportingandmonitoringthecontent.Awards,trophiesandmedalsaregiven.
ThiscocurricularactivityisforthosestudentswhoarepassionateaboutDramaandwanttogainasmuch
stageexperienceaspossible.Thereisastrongemphasisonteamworkandorganisation.Studentsare
expectedtoattendatleastoneofthetwoscheduledrehearsalsessionseachweek.Rehearsalswillstartin
thesecondweekofTermOneandtheFestivalwilltakeplaceinthesecondlastweekofTermOne.Students
aretonotethereisamaximumoffiftyplacesavailable.Ifmorethanfiftystudentssignup,anauditionwill
beheldinthefirstweekandunsuccessfulstudentswillbeaskedtoselectadifferentcocurricularactivity.
Thereisasmallfeetocoverrehearsalandperformancerelatedcostssuchasphotocopyingofscripts,
purchaseofmedalsandprizes,andtheuseoftheatreequipment.

TheBackstageClubisforpassionateDramastudentswholovethebuzzofworkinginthetheatre,offstage
aswellason.Thisgroupoforganisedandselfmotivatedstudentsrunthesetchangesforallthemajor
schoolproductionsaswellasmanagethefrontofhouse,trainandworkasmakeupandhairstylistsand
workcloselywiththeactorsinrehearsals.

Thiscocurricularactivityinvolvesstudentsmeetingregularlyataweeklylunchtimebriefingbutstudentswill
alsoberequiredatschoolonweekendsandlateeveningsaroundproductiontime.Studentswillbe
requiredtowearlongblackpantsandalongsleevedblacktopwhilstworkingbackstageduringthe
productionseason.

BackstageClubmembersarehappytosupportothersinthespotlight.BackstageClubisopentostudents
fromyearsSeventoTwelvewithamaximumoftenmembers.Ifmorethantenmembersapplyaninterview

Thisactivitymeetsonaweeklybasis.Thebasicskillsofdebatingareintroducedanddiscussed.Students
formteamsinwhichtheyfeelcomfortableandbegintotakesomesmallrisksastheybegintodebate.Some
researchisrequiredtoprepareforformaldebatesoutsideandinsidetheschool.Generallyspeaking,
meetingsareusedtodiscussstrategiesandpreparedebatesforthecompetition.Ideasaresharedand
studentsareencouragedtojointeamsandsupportresearchforthedebates.Thedebatingteamsare
involvedwiththeDebatersAssociationofVictoria(DAV)whicheducatesstudentsonhowtodebate
formally.DAVisaformallyorganiseddebatingcompetitionagainstotherschoolsinthedistrict.Juniorand
SeniorDebatingTeamscompeteintheICCESDebatingCompetitionatthebeginningofTerm3.Generally

opportunitiesforstudents,teachers,parentsandlocalindustrytoworktogethertodesignandconstructa

whentheCountryEducationProjectbeganseekingnewwaystoengageyoungpeopleinregionalVictoria

Services(BCHS),whohavethecontracttoprovidesettlementsupportservicesandcasemanagementto
recentlyarrivedrefugees.Forexample,theyreceivenotificationofthearrivalofnewfamiliessoastobe
abletocoordinatedonationofwarmclothingaswellasrequestsforadditionalblanketsfromtheBCHSCase
