Each year, the Seamens Church Institute presents the Silver Bell Award to an individual or
group of individuals in recognition of outstanding leadership in the maritime community.
The bell was chosen to symbolize the award because of its historical significance in religious ceremonies and its use on board ships since ancient times.

For centuries the bell has announced the hours of the day, marked the beginning and the
end of a watch, called the crew to mess and to prayer, and warned of danger.
Believing that dangerous beasts populated the seas, mariners as late as the 16th century
festooned their ships with bells which were thought to have special powers to ward
off demons and monsters and to dissolve thunderstorms.
In England, ships bells were always held in high regard. It was customary in the Royal Navy
for the children of British subjects living in foreign ports to be baptized under the bell of a
British warship. The childs name was inscribed inside the bell, forming visible ties between
British nationals and Mother England.
In the past, many United States Navy ships carried interesting and beautiful bells, but,
unfortunately, in many cases there are no records of their history or whereabouts.
Seldom do bells serve on more than one ship, although bells from wrecked or scrapped
ships have had new careers. The bell from the steamboat Atlantic, which capsized off
Fishers Island in November 1846, is an example. The bell was acquired by subscription
from the Atlantic Mutual Companies for the Institutes floating chapel for seamen in 1847
and has been moved to prominent places in successor SCI buildings.

Captain Robert Bob E. Johnston began his 45-year career at Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) as
Third Mate in an oil tanker fleet in 1969. He gained seagoing experience in all capacities aboard crude oil
and product tankers as he moved up to Master. In 1974, Bob assumed command of a 38,000-ton tanker.
Two years later, he came ashore to work as Marine Superintendent for Maritime Overseas Corporation,
the agent for OSG. Named Vice President U.S. Flag Operations in 1983, Bob took responsibility for a
fleet of 16 United States-flagged vessels. From there, he moved up the ranks: Senior Vice President to
Chief Commercial Officer for the entire OSG Fleet and then to Executive Vice President. OSG appointed
Bob as Head of Worldwide Shipping Operations in 2005 and later made him Head of the U.S. Flag
Business unit in 2009. Bob became President and CEO of OSG in 2013; and after a fruitful 45-year career,
he retired from the company in August 2014.
Dr. Craig E. Philip has spent 35 years in leadership positions throughout the transportation industry. He
began his career at Consolidated Rail Corporation and later became Vice President of the Intermodal
Division of Southern Pacific Railroad. From 1993 to 2014, Craig served as President and CEO of Ingram
Barge Company, as it grew to become the largest US domestic marine transportation carrier.
Bob has worked with a number of maritime organizations. He serves as the President of the American
Maritime Association, a Council Member and Class Committee Member at the American Bureau
of Shipping, a Board Member at the Gard P&I Club and Member of the National Cargo Bureau. He
previously served as a Member of the Board of the Alaska Tanker Company (ATC), the Executive
Committee and Vice-Chairman of Intertanko and Director of the Marine Preservation Association (MPA).
Craig has served as Chairman of the American Waterways Operators, the National Waterways
Conference, the US Chambers Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and as a member of the
Transportation Research Boards Executive Committee and the Marine Board. Craig currently serves as a
US Commissioner of PIANC (International Water Transport Congress) and on the boards of the ArcBest
Corporation, the USDOTs National Freight Advisory Committee, the Seamens Church Institute, the Red
Cross of Tennessee and the Nashville Civic Design Center.
In 2010, Craig was designated a Distinguished Diplomate in ACOPNE (Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port
and Navigation Engineers) and in 2014 was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He has
pursued a passion for education and since his departure from Ingram has taken a Research Professorship
at Vanderbilt University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research interests
include management and sustainability of freight transportation networks and operations; infrastructure
resilience and application of risk management tools to public policy making; carrier safety management
and regulation of 24/7/365 operations; water resource management and balancing multi-stakeholder interests.
