Set a goal.
As lots of people say, beginnings are always
the hardest. However, simply setting a goal
is not very hard and it certainly is a
beginning for you to get motivated.
Be prepared for the weather.
The weather is really tricky during the
spring. Checking the weather before doing
an activity will certainly help you decide
what to do!
Keep your allergies under control.
If you have seasonal allergies and the spring
weather makes you sneezy and itchy,
consider joining a local gym or investing in
a treadmill until your allergies subside.
Less time online!
The only reason you should be online is if
you are looking for something to do during
spring.
Choose an activity that you enjoy.
This is the most important. If you choose
something you enjoy doing, you will want
to take the time out of your day to do it.

Montreals Free Musical Swings At Quartier Des Spectacles Are Back

BY SYNDEN

HOPE-JOHNSTON, MARCH 24, 2015, MONTREAL BLOG

ne of the many joys of springtime in Montreal, apart from the melting snow and the ability to, you know, stand outside comfortably, is
being able to swing outside in the heart of the

city.

Making their triumphant return this year are the

musical swings at Quartier des Spectacles, marking the start of
festival season in Montreal. Custom-made for the Promenade
des Artistes, the 21 Balanoires installation has been a huge
success since their inception two years ago. So much so,
there is a widely circulated meme that Montreal has swings
for bus stops.
While the swings are located right next to Place des
Arts metro station, they are not in fact the bus stop, so I
dont recommend using them while you wait because you
will miss your bus, but if you do have a little time to kill and
have always fancied yourself as a bit of musician, swinging
sets off musical notes, and together form a melody.
21 Balanoires will be installed as of April 8 but will
only last until June 1, so make sure you get your swing on
before its too late.

Swing into spring.

Cell phones: helpful or harmful?

by TIMOTHY LLAMERA, SEC V ENGLISH STUDENT

Along with their books and school

supplies, many students make their daily trip
to school with their trusty cell phones. These
pocket-sized tools can do anything from making a standard phone call to surfing the web.
Their presence present a host of options and
challenges for today's students. Cell phones
can be helpful academic tools, or harmful academic disruptions depending how they are
used.
Cell phones can negatively affect the
lives of students, specifically their health and
education. Students often use their phones to
play games and to chat and gossip with
friends. This is one reason why they do not
have enough time to study. In fact, students
are often more interested in wasting time on
mobile phones than in spending it on studying. Also, many daily accidents happen because of cell phones. In addition to accidents,
cell phones can also have a negative impact
on health. Several studies conducted by the

health experts have shown their impact on

health. However, mobile devices can also affect students in positive ways. Students can
use their cell phones to become better organized by recording upcoming assignments and
organizing their weekday or weekend schedules. Students can also use their cell phones as
planners. In addition, they can become more
knowledgeable by using their cell phones to
gain instant access to surf the internet. In other words, cell phones also have a positive impact on students study habits.
All in all, cell phones are increasingly
one of the most popular devices for accessing
information. What stands out from recent
research is the increasing use of interactive,
multiuser functions which can be both disruptive and beneficial during study. However, in
my opinion, these devices are undeniably convenient, helpful tools for studying and can be
a hurtful source of distraction depending on a
student.

Censorship: What is it?

by MARC ANGELO DELA CRUZ, SEC IV MATH STUDENT

In todays society there is an

issue of whether or not certain topics
that arent fully accepted by our culture
should have set restrictions on them to
prevent any individuals from being offended. The ideal concept that everyone
in a given group should conform to the
same views has come about as a result
of a process commonly known as censorship. Censorship can oppress individual minds as well as the social opinions and beliefs of the time. Censorship
is all about perspective. Whether you
are an over the top strict parent or a
care-free kid who wants to let it all
hang out, censorship will always be a

topic of heated debate. Both sides have

their pros and cons. Religious conflicts
can often be avoided by the censorship
of certain images and opinions that
people deem insulting or offensive.
Censorship can be used to prevent politically motivated propaganda, slander,
and plagiarism. It prevents companies
from spreading inaccurate or exaggerated claims about their products or about
other companies. However, for every
argument in favor of strict censorship,
there is another argument against it.
You can probably see that this topic is
largely a matter of degree. The questions that censorship boards need to ask

themselves are what is the rationale

behind the censorship? Are we censoring the media as per that rationale? Is
the media being allowed to display
what it ought to display? Are they
showing things that people want to or
need to know about? Censorship is a
double-edged sword. An absence of
censorship might not be a good idea, as
this can lead to chaos or worse. However, this doesn't mean that the government should be allowed to use censorship for its own ends by suppressing
dissent. Ours is a democratic nation,
yet has more censorship than most nations. Thats the irony.

Bilingualism: pourquoi cest important

by KREZTORV FUGABAN, SEC V MATH STUDENT

reality that we live in a place where bilingualism and multiculturalism are widespread. But why should we still discuss
this issue? Because it involves us in helping to shape a better
community. Regardless of your mother tongue, either English or French, we are all equal. Therefore, our primary goal
is to encourage everyone to practice both English and
French. Moreover, the main value in learning a new language is opening new doors. By learning another language,
you understand its people and its culture. Many claim that
learning a new language abolishes their culture but the truth
is, bilingualism preserves cultures and helps build better
societies. In fact, it enhances not only reasoning and problem-solving but job opportunities as well. Then why should
we close the door being opened for us? This only leads to
reducing our options in life. We must take advantage of
what we have. Although it seems hard to forget history,
since it is already an irreversible scar on our heart, let us
face the future, live the reality, and make our own together.
As the saying goes, United we stand, divided we fall. Bilingualism has a beneficial impact on our province. It opens
many opportunities. We must not keep our mind closed up
in a box. Learning a language is not hard, Where theres a
will, theres a way, Our problem is not the lack of knowing; it is the lack of doing. Let us try to be open-minded
as this will lead us in shaping a better society.

Bonjour! Hi!, we hear such expressions everyday

in Montreal. Bilingualism is not a new topic in our community since most of us speak both English and French. Being
bilingual has many benefits as already proven by many
studies. For instance, it has been shown that, compared to
their monolingual peers, bilingual children are better able to
focus their attention on relevant information and to ignore
irrelevant distractions. However, it is sad to say in other P.S. Let me clarify, I am not only encouraging you to be bilingual, being multilinplaces, for some reason, language still acts as a barrier to gual is even better.

Why manner matters?

by REVIE FUGABAN, SEC V ENGLISH STUDENT

Many of us walking around today must have had

the experience of someone bumping into us and then simply
walking away without even saying excuse me. Well not to
be biased, but some of them may have been in an emergency situation and could not stop as they had no time to
waste. However, in many other cases, whatever else they
are doing, they were not in such a rush. In fact, we can usually judge whether a such a person was in an urgent situation or not. It is true that it gets a bit annoying to see a rude
person acting as if nothing has happened especially when
ones feelings or toes get trod on.
How can we deal with situations like this? Well, we
can simply try to exercise good manners. Good manners are
important and when exercised, people will treat each other
with love, appreciation, and respect. Good manners usually
begin at home, and are later developed and refined in the

community, especially at school and at work. One of the

most common ways in which we can exercise good manners is in how we convey ourselves when we speak. We
should speak carefully and try always to choose the right
words so as not to offend or anger others. Humbleness and
self-discipline are some contributing factors in maintaining
good manners. Good manners can be applied in many situations, from how we eat to how we treat our fellows. Just
trying to obey our parents is an example of good manners.
In conclusion, being rude is not a good characteristic. Its not a way to solve problems; its a way to create
them. Good manners are useful in all kinds of circumstances. They help use gain respect and friends. Remember, we
have the freedom to choose between good and bad so lets
avoid bad manners and grab every opportunity to do good
because doing good will not result in bad.

Computer-video games: the modern art

by GEORGI SAMSONOV, SEC V ENGLISH STUDENT

Should we consider
video games to be forms of
modern art?
This question has
lead to many debates in
artistic circles. Although,
many arguments have been
presented few clear answers
have emerged. Presently for
a creation to be acclaimed
as an "artistic creation" it
must receive the approval
of a group of art critics who
hold the power to declare
the work of one artist a
master piece and that of
another a banality. For example, although Picassos
geometrical creations or
Malevichs black square are
considered master works,
the perfect recreations of

atmosphere, physics, and

emotions using digital technology are not considered
worthy of serious attention.
There's another belief that works of art are
sources of aesthetic but not
financial enrichment. Such
a belief is absurd. Did Michelangelo paint St. Peters
basilica for free? What
about Leonardo DaVinci
and Picasso? Those masters
sold their talents, creating
different painting for numerous clients. Therefore,
this argument is invalid.
Let's face facts.
Computer-video games are
a form of modern art, the
art of the digital century.
As the machine age gave

new experiences, new paths
for innovation and experimentation which is accessible to the general public as
a whole. Those who think
otherwise are living in the

should embrace it.
Let me clarify myself. Just as not all paintings should be considered
works of art, nor should all
games be considered works
of art. However, that is not
to say that there are not
digital creations that should
not be considered true master pieces.

A gym for sports activities would be awesome.

Sports club? Its cool isn't it? Not only for the sporty
students, but also for those who want to be sporty!
A clinic or nurse for our school is very necessary in
case of emergencies.
Field trips for students would be great to explore and
learn more.
An adult graduation ball
An art class would be interesting. It would help students discover talents they never knew they had and
enable others to further refine their artistic skills.
A debating club could encourage students to develop
their reasoning, communication and critical thinking
skills.
A dance club would give students a place to practice
their dancing skills especially with summer approaching!
As spring comes to an end, a cooking class would be
an ideal way to prepare for summer vacation.

High School, for the second time

by MOHAMMED ABOU EL ROUS , SEC. V ENGLISH STUDENT

The first time I was in high

school, I didnt have to study as hard as
I do now at St. Laurent Adult Centre.
At that time, Id often skip classes and
just get the notes from a classmate. Id
study for exams the day before. Sometime, Id just guess the answers if I had
to and still Id often get a perfect mark.
However, now Im in high school for
the second time, I need to be more attentive. The lectures are more complex.
They are filled with more information
and ideas and I have to use my time
responsibly and take advantage to good
study habits. In fact, I have completely
transformed the way I study since I was
in my first high school. At St. Laurent,
I am learning, many new things and I
am enjoying myself. Nevertheless, these changes have required a lot of selfcontrol and practice. I have changed
my entire approach to learning. I study
more, pay closer attention and push
myself harder in order to succeed.

Starting high school for the

second time affected mainly my study
habits. The first couple of months at St.
Laurent went smoothly and I felt that I
was adjusting fine. I knew that St. Laurent would be different from my first
school and I attended classes regularly
and always took notes during lectures.
However, when the mid-term exam
schedule was posted, I realized that I
needed to manage my time better and
to be more consistent in my study habits. The mid-term exams really caused
me to change my mindset. I designated
certain days as study days during
which I would study all of my subjects
in the hope of improving my
knowledge. I also realized that I hadnt
been paying enough attention during
class. Sometimes, I would text during
class and would let my mind drift off. I
realized that this contributed to my
declining grades. Eventually, being
more attentive helped me improve my

grades.
Finally, the biggest difference
between St. Laurent and my first high
school is that St. Laurent really helps
the students to become better prepared
for the new material. My first high
school did not provide free tutoring,
but here at St. Laurent we have devoted tutors and teachers. Do not hesitate
to ask for help. Even if you are an independent type student, you have to step
out of your comfort zone and seek
help. For instance, when Im in the
reading club, I ask questions. Ive
learned to ask for help when I need it.
In this way, I know that I will improve.
It seems like Im always comparing my first and second high
schools, because there are so many
similarities and differences. Making
these comparisons have helped me to
change my lifestyle. Even though I
sometimes slip and fall, I know I have
to get back up and keep trying.

School Life is the best time in Human Life The advantage of going back to school
by ROSILYN GUERRERO, SEC IV ENGLISH STUDENT

by HIBA ABD ALJABAR, SEC IV ENGLISH STUDENT

School life is a very important part of human life because it provides discipline and opportunity to study. Aside
from these, school life is a preparatory stage for entering the
public world. School activities play an important role in widening the outlook of the students and developing virtues such
as perseverance, sincerity, truthfulness, tolerance, discipline
and obedience. It is a meeting place for students and teachers
where students learn to adjust to their society. Moreover,
teachers act as guides to lead them on the right track.
In school, teachers try to remove bad habits from
students by implanting good manners and right conduct
which sometimes makes them feel that they are bound by too
many rules and regulations. Yet students who care about their
studies keep themselves up to date and make every effort to
attend classes whether they want to or not, because attendance is mandatory and their marks depend on it! That is why
school is the right place for pursuing youthful dreams.
School can definitely have a healthy influence on
human life, but some students still indulge in bad habits and
do not obey their teachers. Although, I do too sometimes I try
never to miss the chance to take advantage of school while I
am young
Above all, I would like to mention: In the cookie of
life, school and teachers are the chocolate chips that make
life sweet, surprising, and yummy. I would like to thank my
teachers for inspiring me in my everyday life.

There are many advantages to going back to

school and getting a degree. Finishing high school will
help you advance to a higher level and pursue a more satisfying a career, which in turn will have an impact on how
much you earn later on in life.
Having a high school diploma is one way to reach
your dreams, fulfill your desires and attain your goals. Say
you have a job that pays your bills but does not fulfill your
dreams. Going back to school will give a chance to realize
your dreams by getting a new job. It will also help boost
your confidence. Moreover, going back to school is a great
opportunity for immigrants who have decided to come to
Canada and start a new life. It gives them not only a valuable chance to explore the history and communities making up their new culture but also valuable time to learn the
languages in which they will live. Moreover, they can
make new friends to help them feel like they belong to a
community and to avoid feelings of alienation.
Going back to school is like a revolution in ones
life. It is a great chance to create a new career, realize new
dreams, make new friends and build a new life.

Message from the Science Department

IRENA NAJDOWSKI, SEC V PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY TEACHER

Spring has sprung! Warm weather is

slowly creeping in. The school year 2014-2015
has been a spectacular year for many students
at St. Laurent. For some students the spring
session may be their final session before going
to CEGEP or a trade school, for others the
end of one level of their studies before proceeding to the next level at St. Laurent.
For Lunar Eclipses this has also been
a spectacular year. Lunar eclipses occur when
there is a full moon and the earths shadow
blocks the suns light from directly reaching
the moons surface. This can only happen
when sun, earth and moon are aligned to from
an almost or an exact straight line, and the
earth is in the middle, between the sun and the
moon. When the sun, earth and moon are not
perfectly aligned, you may only get a partial or
no eclipse at all.
What made this year special in terms
of lunar eclipses was the Montreals caught a
glimpse of a total lunar eclipse on April 4,
2015. A total lunar eclipse is commonly

known as Blood Moon, because the moon appears a deep blood red. The deep blood red
coloring occurs because the earths atmosphere refracts or bends the longer wavelengths
of the suns light, the color red, whilst it blocks
or removes the shorter wavelengths of other
colors, and thus indirectly lights up the moons
surface as blood red. It was the shortest recorded total lunar eclipse this century, lasting
less than 10 minutes. However, because of
where Montreal is located on earth, you could
only see a small part of the blood red moon.
The news is that on September 28, 2015, you
will be able to see the complete Blood Moon in
Montreal. You can safely observe this total
lunar eclipse with the naked and unaided eye,
i.e. no special equipment is required. You cannot do this with the solar eclipses. If you stare
directly at the sun during a solar eclipse you
can do considerable damage to your eyes and/
or become blind. To find out more about solar
eclipses be sure to get a copy of the Fall Edition 2015 of the St. Laurent Express.

English Secondary 5s Theatre Experience: Triplex Nervosa

by REYNA ANGUSTIA LOUISE OMICTIN, ENGLISH SEC V STUDENT

Education is not merely being confined within the

four corners of the classroom but also through certain experiences, one may find outside its boundaries. And this is
what Mr. Joseph Marques Secondary 5 English class have
proven after a delightful Montreal theatre experience featuring Marianne Ackermans Triplex Nervosa, last April 29,
2015 at the Centaur Theatre.
The comedy play is all about a young woman, Tass
who has a promising musical career yet left everything to

acquire a Triplex located at the Mile End part of Montreal.

However, life starts to turn its back towards her as she starts
having trouble keeping the place together as her tenants and
the Hassidic previous owner of the triplex would not cooperate with her needs financially. Being left with no option,
she conspires with her handy-man to make one tenants life
difficult in order to kick him out of the triplex. Things started to get serious when they encounter a very dreadful dilemma involving a crime making a way for Tass to realize the
trouble she gets from the Triplex. Eventually,
after the turmoil, she decides to pursue her
love for music and sell her triplex therefore
putting everything back into its proper place.
Although most of the students were
first-timers, the play was in effect a very helpful learning tool to better understand drama
and theatre as an art and a literary masterpiece. Not only that, it was an avenue for
them to appreciate literature and embrace its
colors without just having to read and analyze
a play through books but also grasps its actual
form.
In addition, Mr. Marques students
were able to apply what they have observed
from Triplex Nervosa to their own mini-plays
which they presented as one of the components of their final exams.

Canadian PoetJohn McRae

by GEORGI SAMSONOV, SEC V ENGLISH STUDENT

John McRae who was born on November 30, 1972 in Guelph, Ontario, was a
Canadian poet, physician, author, artist, and
soldier during the First World War. He was a
surgeon at the second battle of Ypres, in Belgium. When Britain declared war on the German empire, Canada being a dominion within
British empire automatically joined
the war in order to
protect the mother
country. One of the
men who sailed off
to fight the Great
War was John
McRae, a physicist
from McGill university. McRae was
appointed as brigade surgeon and
major, second in
command of the 1st
brigade of Canadian field artillery.

He treated the wounded during the second

battle of Ypres in 1915 (one of the battles that
brought fame to Canadian soldiers, helping to
create the Canadian army as it was the first
battle fought by Canadians and is today considered to have been a great victory).
McRae's friend, Alexis Helmer was
killed in the battle and his burial inspired Lt.
Colonel McRae in to writing "In Flanders
Field". On June 1, 1915 John McRae was ordered to set up No. 3 Canadian general hospital at Dannes-Camiers near Boulogne-Sur-Mer
in northern France. On January 28, 1918,
while still commanding No. 3 Canadian General hospital at Boulogne, McRae died of
pneumonia.
He

On May 3, 2015 hundreds took part in
the unveiling of a new statue in honor of John
McRae in Ottawa, commemorating the 100th
anniversary of poem in Flanders field.

In Flanders fields the poppies

blow
Between the crosses, row on
row,
That mark our place: and in
the sky
The larks still bravely singing
fly
Scarce heard amid the guns
below.
We are the dead: Short days
ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset
glow,
Loved and were loved: and
now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the
foe
To you, from failing hands, we
throw
The torch: be yours to hold it
high
If ye break faith with us who
die,
We shall not sleep, though
poppies grow

to everyone. Headaches often indicate poor sleep, dehydration, hunger, or even in more severe cases can be an indication for illnesses and/or diseases. As many of us become
more self-conscious about our health and how we can prevent getting sick, we should start incorporating foods that
promote health. The following foods are helpful in preventing (and curing) headaches and those who suffer from headaches should seriously considered including them in their
diets. In reality, who wants to be taking pain killers for the

Often times, we forget to eat which reduces energy
supplied to the brain. When the brain is short of energy this
can also cause the body to deplete glycogen stores and become dehydrated which can result in a headache. If this is
the case, reach for whole grain bread and/or oats.

10 most frequently asked interview questions
The Telegraph Media Group

Interview questions and styles may change from

business to business however there are questions that are
commonly known to be asked at interview.
So, to help you prepare for your next interview
here are the 10 most frequently asked interview questions
you need to know:
1. Tell Me About Yourself?
This is usually the first question asked in an interview as it
lets the interviewer know a little bit about you.
Make sure that you identify areas that reflect the job you
are being interviewing for, and show your enthusiasm. This
can show the interviewer how you are well suited to the
job. Also try and include some of the achievements you feel
are important.
2. What Are Your Key Strengths/Skills?
When answering this question, it is important that you respond with relevant skills and strengths that make you suited to the job.
3. What Are Your Weaknesses?
Try not to be too critical when answering this question.
Instead pick one of your weaknesses and try to turn it into a
positive.
4. Why Did You Leave Your Last Job?
Whatever the situation was from your previous job, you
should always answer this question with a positive and enthusiastic response.
5. Why Do You Want This Job?
Answer this question with a response that highlights why
you would be a good candidate for the job and how enthusiastic you are about it. Ensure that you show an interest in
the job sector, understand the company and their ethos and
show how your skills match their requirements.
6. Give me an example of a difficult situation/task at work
and how you dealt with it.
This is often asked so that you can express situations in
which you used problem-solving and communication skills
to help resolver the situation. It is suggested that you identify a situation that you assisted in settling through showing
emotional intelligence.
7. Tell me about an achievement you are proud of.
This question gives you the opportunity to show how past
achievements will benefit the business. It is suggested that
you only include personal achievements if they are highly
impressive or prestigious. Otherwise try and identify a time

where you achieved a good sale or something relevant to

the job role.
8. What Are Your Career Goals?
The reason for this question being asked is because the employer wants to understand how long you intend to stay
for. Reassure them by explaining how the job role fits your
career plan, as this will display your long-term commitment to the company
9. What Are Your Expectations Of The Salary?
The salary is typically discussed when the job is actually
offered, so if possible try and avoid bringing this up in the
interview. However, you can give a real but wide salary
range that you are happy to negotiate.
10. What do you know about the organization?
It is very important that you show you have done some
prior research of the company before the interview. Looking into areas such as the company structure, finances, customers, products and services, competitors and market
trends as these are the key areas.

Balancing school and work

by KYLA ISAAC, SEC IV MATH STUDENT

Balancing school and work is not an easy task because we all have different lives and struggles. Some of us
have kids, and others face personal issues. We also struggle
with our social lives. Spending time with family and
friends is a vital part to our mental health. But no matter
what, we are all capable of achieving our goals if we want
to. Here are some tips that may help you out.
1. Be Organized
Organize your time. Make an agenda to mark
down important things. Organize your school study time
and work time.
2. Set a goal
Setting a goal is important; knowing what you are
working for will help keep you motivated until you reach
your goal.
3. Take a deep breath
Manage you level of stress. Having a busy life
shouldnt mean having a miserable life. Getting adequate
sleep is important. In addition to a healthy diet, take a deep
breath and make time for yourself to gather your thoughts.
4. Know your limit
Dont over commit yourself, know how far you
can push your mind and body. Dont try to be employee of
the month and to get over 90 percent in each of your classes if you know that just isnt you. Being realistic with
yourself will prevent you from failing and it will keep you
motivated. However, dont be afraid to challenge yourself
and accomplish goals. This could boost your selfconfidence.

Having troubles in playing basketball?

by CARL SAMOYA, SEC V ENGLISH STUDENT

Whether you play on the streets or in an official

game, here are some techniques which will help to improve
your game. These include shooting, passing and dribbling.
Shooting is basically trying to shoot the ball into the
net and score, hence the name, shooting. The most wellknown shots are jump shot, layup and the slam dunk.
The jump shot is the most basic shot in basketball. To
perform this shot, you need to
jump and shoot, hoping the ball
slides into the net.
The lay-up is where you are close
to the basket and basically "lay" up
the ball so that it will just fall into
the basket. You dont need to
bounce it on the board. (In my
opinion). Specifically, you run
towards the net, then jump up to
lightly bump the ball so the ball
will go through the net.
The slam dunk is an extremely
awesome move, but to do this, you
have to be quite tall, or a high
jumper. To achieve this, a player
with the ball must jump up, have the ball above the rim
of the net, and dunk the ball through the hoop.
Passing is when you pass the ball with intentions
that another player in your team will receive it. Here are
some basic knowledge which you need to know:
The chest pass is named so because the pass originates

from the chest. It is thrown by gripping the ball on the

sides with the thumbs directly behind the ball. When
throwing a chest pass, the players should strive to throw
it to the receiver's chest level.
The bounce pass is thrown with the same motion however it is aimed at the floor. It should be thrown far
enough out that the ball bounces waist high to the receiver.
The overhead pass is often used as
an outlet pass. Bring the ball directly
above your for
head with both hands on the side of
the ball and follow through. Aim for
the teammate's chin.
Lastly, dribbling is basically propelling
the ball in any direction by bouncing it
with your hands.
Using your fingertips, bounce the
basketball against the floor. Keep your
head up so you can see the floor, using
your peripheral vision to see your
teammates and the defense. Stay as
low as possible and keep the ball close
to you so that your defender cannot steal it away.

These are all you need to know! Remember, to

build a house, you need to start with the foundation. The
same thing in basketball, all you need to do, is to start from
the basics and improve along the way! Good luck everyone
and enjoy the spring season!

WHAT IS VICTORIA DAY?

by TIMOTHY LLAMERA, SEC V ENGLISH STUDENT

Victoria Day is an annual holiday that has been celebrated all over
Canada since 1845. It is normally celebrated before the last week in May and
Im willing to bet that most Canadians
dont know what this day signifies, although they are more than happy to
enjoy a day off from work and school. I
will attempt to remedy this shocking
ignorance.
Victoria Day marks both the
birth of Queen Victoria and of Canadas sovereignty. In 1901, upon Queen
Victorias death, Canadians officially
named this day Victoria Day. In
Quebec, the day is known as La journee nationale des patriotes to honour both
English and French revolutionist who
fought for Canadas independence. Later on, it came to mark the beginning of

summer. This day is important to Canadians because it commemorates both

the birth of Queen Victoria and of Canada. It symbolizes Canadas partial
independence from the British rule with
the help of Queen Victoria.
In most provinces, Victoria
Day is a statutory holiday allowing
Canadians to enjoy a day off from
work. It is normally celebrated with
fireworks and street parades. These
parades often re-enact the history behind the day. Other shows commemorate the life of Queen Victoria. There
are also special documentaries about
the history of Canada.
To conclude, Victoria Day is a
Canadian tradition that allows citizens
to commemorate their history and heritage. It is important to celebrate this

day and to honour the efforts of revolutionists and past rulers. It is a fine tradition for Canadians to celebrate the day
by heading to a cottage or campground
in order to drink themselves into oblivion. The holiday is a relaxing break
from daily stress and the long weekend
is a fine way to further unwind after a
long hard winter. Getting out of the
bright lights and noise of the city for a
long week-end getaway, spending quality time and reconnecting with family
and loved ones in a nice cozy cottage or
bed-and-breakfast sounds like an okay
plan to me.
P.S. The Victoria Day celebration is
also known as May Two-Four Weekend,
May long weekend (or May Long), Victoria
Day weekend or even Firecracker Day. But no
matter what you call it, have fun celebrating this
patriotic Canadian holiday!
