1 Matemtica na pr-histria
A histria da matemtica uma rea de estudo dedicada investigao sobre a origem das descobertas da
matemtica e, em uma menor extenso, investigao
dos mtodos matemticos e aos registros ou notaes matemticas do passado.
Anteriormente modernidade e expanso mundial
do conhecimento, os exemplos escritos de novos progressos matemticos tornaram-se conhecidos em apenas
poucas localidades. Os textos matemticos mais arcaicos disponveis que nos so conhecidos so o Plimpton
322 (matemtica babilnica, cerca de 1900 a.C.)[1] , o
Papiro Matemtico de Rhind (matemtica egpcia, cerca
de 2000-1800 a.C.)[2] e o Papiro Matemtico de Moscou (matemtica egpcia, cerca de 1890 a.C.). Todos
estes textos versam sobre o ento chamado Teorema de
Pitgoras, que parece ser o progresso matemtico mais
amplamente difundido depois da aritmtica bsica e da
geometria.

O interesse pela Histria da Matemtica iniciou, tambm, na Grcia Antiga. Eudemo de Rodes (sculo IV
a.C.), um dos discpulos de Aristteles, escreveu histrias da aritmtica, da geometria e da astronomia que, infelizmente, no foram conservadas. Durante o perodo
greco-romano, matemticos como Papo de Alexandria e
Teon, pai da lsofa Hipatia, discutiram e comentaram a
obra de seus predecessores.
