Fast and Furious 7

1) This is a typical shot of film trailers in order to provide credibility and

make the rightful ownership of the content clear to the audience. It
is also a bold statement to the audience to state that this is the
institution that has funded them which connotes a certain level of
significance. It also appeals to a diverse audience as the audience
have a certain expectation of the quality of the product they are
about to watch.

2) This is
the opening
shot of the trailer. The mid-shot is particularly distinctive because it
is a familiar character to the audience as this is a franchise of
multiple movies. Vin Diesel is widely well known and this following
the Universal shot essentially creates an implication of the movie
having an all-star cast. Alongside the non-diegetic music which
are fast paced drum beats, this helps create a sense of the movie
being epic. The mid-shot also clearly displays that this is taking
place in a car which is not only typical of the genre conventions in
an action/thriller but also of the conventions of the franchise as it is
all about fast cars etc. The lighting of the scene is particularly dark
and shadowy to create suspense, alongside the non-diegetic music,
this helps to build a tense atmosphere amongst the audience and
help allure them into being interested in the trailer. Ultimately, fans
of the franchise are the primary target audience as they have
followed all of the various other movies, however, this suspense
being created helps to appeal to a wider and more diverse
secondary audience.

3) This close-up of the foot on the pedal is typical of this particular

action/thriller genre as it implies speed and thrill. It is also a
convention of the franchise as this is a typical and frequent shot
used within every one of the movies. This allows the audience to
relate it back to the various other movies. The use of close up on the
black boots has a connotation of the rebellious nature that these
films hold. The colour black also connotes mystery, danger and
suspense which is an expectation of the audience.

4) This
close-up of the
character signifies the horror and shock on his face in correlation to
the tension and suspense implied in the previous shot and displayed
in the upcoming shot. It also appeals to the humorous element of
these movies as this is another typical sub-genre within the movies.
It also plays on stereotypes as the black character is often the
humorous, amusing and easily-terrified character. This does create a
large appeal nevertheless as this is a successful stereotype which
interests and humours the audience. The mise-en-scene through the
steering wheel and the windows make it explicitly clear that this is a
car being driven. This allows for a sense of authenticity within the
movie. The colour green almost implies war which is essentially

what they are doing as they presumably getting involved in some

type of conflict.

5) This mid-shot follows the previous shot of the shock and horror on
the face of the character. This shot appears reckless and rebellious,
which is a common theme within these movies, it is also again
suspenseful and exciting and therefore enticing to the audience as
they are rooting for the success of the characters as they already
on their side through the other movies creating a relationship
between them and the audience. This mid-shot allows for the
mountains to be in-view showing the isolation of the area, creating a
sense of thrill as it is new and exciting and wild which is what
the audience look for in these movies and also in this particular
genre.

6) This
wide-shot of
the character running up a bus is a typical genre convention of the
use of CGI within the thriller and action genre. It also re-emphasises
the location that the scene is taking place. It provides the danger
element of the genre and also the thrilling element as it gives the
audience as sense of tension as to if the character is going to make
it. Similarly, the mise-en-scene, such as the rocks and the bus help
to create a realistic appearing scene which is essential in selling the
movie. The bold foreground contrasting the light/pale background

helps the events taking place in the foreground be more significant,

alongside the music which helps to evoke excitement amongst the
audience.

7) This
establishing
shot helps to signify a change in location and helps to re-locate the
audience so that it is clear that there is a location change. It also
connotes the city lifestyle which has been prominent throughout
the other films and the various other trailers within the franchise.
The lighting of the shot is extremely dark, with the lights from the
buildings lighting it up, this implies that it is the city-life that is
alive at all hours as the party-culture is prominent throughout the
various movies. Again, this is typical of the genre.

8) This
wide-shot of
the character holding the assault rifle is a convention of the subgenre of crime-drama within the movie. The background appears to
be a hidden garage which implies they are preparing for a fight. The
bullet-proof vest with FBI on it helps to create the typical good vs
bad stereotype. Evidently, as he is wearing a vest belonging to the
police it implies that he is on the good side. Nevertheless there is a

large contrast as he is holding a rifle but wearing a FBI jacket,

which is something that would belong to the bad side, this implies
that they cross over but for the purpose of the good-side. The
lighting makes the shot appear very shadowy which helps to build
up the audience to an epic event.

9) This
establishing
shot signifies another location switch. This is in conjunction with the
diegetic music which is Arabian or middle-eastern to show the
location and culture change. This shot is aesthetically appealing
with the sunset and the bright blue clear water, this creates the
wow-factor amongst the audience which again is an expectation
of the audience.

10)
This low-angle shot allows you to see the cars in depth and
see how epic they are, as the franchise is about cars this is a
significant and expected shot. The red car contrasts the black car
showing variation between the characters and the availability of the
luxurious, idealistic cars. This allows the audience to have a sense of
escapism as this is extremely idealistic, it also allows for a sense of
identity as everyone would want to aspire to that. (Uses and
Gratifications).

11)
This wideshot is the final shot in the trailer and it features Paul Walker. As this
is the final movie Paul Walker made before he passed away which is
an emotional point for the audience. This is extremely significant
and in conjunction with the diegetic music in which the other
characters talk about family, which is a prominent theme
throughout, this helps to create a sense of emotion and allure the
audience as they are well aware that this is his last movie.
