ABSTRACT

Indonesia is known as the 7th best banana producing country in the world. Banana is a
commodity that is widely consumed by Indonesians because around 45% of fruit consumption
consists of bananas. According to the Indonesian Statistic Center data of 2013, production of
banana in Indonesia reaches 5.359.126 ton/year. This high production capacity of banana is not
balanced by the use of banana peel waste. Hence there needs to be more usage in peel waste
because banana peel has many useful contents. One of them is homosalate. This compound is
useful in protecting skin from UV rays that can cause wrinkles. Therefore, an innovation in
cosmetics is to be developed in form of a nanospray. This nanospray is beneficial in maximizing
medicine absorption into the skin so that it becomes more effective. Cosmetic products are the
primary market because many people care about self-vanity making causing this market to have
great prospects. Production of banana peel waste is most considerable in Tuban, East Java, with
the capacity of production of 432.582 ton/year. Banana peel contains 2,2% homosalate therefore
from the data 500.000 100mL botol/day of nanospray ingredients can be produced. From waste
that litters the environment, banana peel can be extracted and then developed into a form of
medicine that is useful for the society.
