FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

1. An R.C.C. column footing of 1.8m x 1.8m size is founded at 1.5m below G.L. The
subsoil consists of a loose deposit of silty sand having the following properties:
= 1.75 t/m3 =20 degree, c = 1.1 t/m2
Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing when the ground water table
is located at:
i.Ground level,
of footing

ii. 0.6m below ground level.

iii. 2.0m below the base
iv. 4.0m below the base of footing.

Given for, = 20 degree, Nc = 11.8, Nq = 3.8, N = 1.3.

2. A slope of 1V : 2H is to be made in a silty clay having an angle of internal friction

5 degree and a cohesion of 0.25 kg/cm 2. The unit weight of the soil is 1.85 gm/cc,
and the depth of cut is 8m. Compute the factor of safety of the slope by the Swedish
circle method.
3. Find the depth of embedment for the sheet-piling shown in fig. below. The soil has
effective unit weight of 17 kN/m3 and an angle of internal friction of 30 degree. Also
solve the same if the soil is clay having an unconfined compressive strength of 70
kn/m2 and a unit weight of 17 kn/m3. Solve the same if the soil is below dredge line is
clay having a cohesion of 35 kN/m2 and the back fill is sand having an angle of internal
friction of 30 degree. The unit weight of both the soils may be assumed as 17 kN/m 3.

4. A 15m long 300mm diameter pile is to be driven in a uniform sand deposit having =
40 degree. The average dry unit weight of sand is 18 kN/m 3. Taking Berezantavs value
of Nq =137, calculate the safe load capacity of pile with a factor of safety 2.5 .

RCC DESIGN
1. Design a stair case ( 2nd flight) of stair room size 5m x 3m externally. Floor
height = 3m, rise = 150mm, trade = 250mm, going portion = 2.250m.
2. Determine area of steel required for the T beam section from the given
data, bf =1500mm, df =100mm, bw = 300mm, overall depth D= 500. Factored
moment Mu = 550 kN-m, Concrete grade M20 and steel grade Fe 415.
3. Design a RCC slab of dimention 4m x 5m whose adjacent edges are
continuous and remaining two edges are discontinuous, against a live load
3.5 kN/m2, M20 concrete and Fe 415 grade of steel should be used. Apply
Limit state method of design as per IS 456.
4. Calculate the Bending moment coefficient of a two-way RCC slab of
dimension 4m x 5.2m whose adjacent edges are discontinuous and
remaining two edges are continuous. Use IS 456.
