Introduction
Attention Getter: Rhetorical Question - Have you ever felt uncomfortable with your body?
Has anyone ever told you that you needed to lose or gain weight? Do you ever just sit in front of
the mirror and list all the flaws that you see?
Transition: Link to Thesis - Some individuals have experienced this and sometimes, things are
taken to another level.
Thesis Statement - Eating disorders, one of Americas deadliest psychological conditions, is
often times disregarded by society.
Preview of Points - I will be talking to you about eating disorders today, its impact on society,
and ways to help this condition.

Body
Main Point 1 - Eating Disorder case numbers are quickly rising in society today.
Subpoint 1 - Although, many people dont know much about eating disorders.
Fact - There are three major categories of eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa (extreme weight
loss, fasting, or restriction of food intake), Bulimia Nervosa (cycles of overeating binges and
purging, laxative abuse, or obligatory exercise), and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified
(when an individual does not meet the criteria for other eating disorders). Mostly seen in children
and teens is the overlapping of eating disorders where they can experience different types at the
same time. Eating disorders have also been seen to go hand in hand with other psychiatric
disorders such as: alcohol or substance abuse and depression or mood disorders.

disorder but only 10 million will report it.
Comparison - With that being said, Eating Disorders are like silent killers. It will keep taking

the killer in.

Subpoint 2 - The reason for body dissatisfaction that everyone likes to point their fingers at is
the media.
Testimony - Many people, especially women, will try to look like the flawless models that they
see because those are dubbed as societys definition of perfect and beautiful. As said by
Margaret Carlisle Duncan, a sociologist who studies sports, The media serves as a prison guard
tower that provides a constant gaze over societal members and monitors bodily flaws.
(Reel 269-271)
Transition: Internal Summary - Until this point, you have learned about eating disorders and
its impact on society. Now, lets try to find some ways to help.
Main Point 3 - There is no way to get rid of this disease, but we can always find a way to help
those who experience this illness.
Subpoint 1 - One of the things that these individuals feel they dont have is support.
Narrative - I have never experienced an eating disorder, but I have been told multiple times by
doctors and coaches that I needed to put on more weight. I didnt see anything wrong but my
doctors thought I wasnt growing and my coaches wanted more power. After much protests from
me, my doctors and coaches decided to drop the subject. This gave me insight on a little portion
of what these individuals see and most of the time, they suffer in silence.
Subpoint 2 - Another way that we can become more aware of eating disorders is if we put our
heads too it.
Example - We can do so by doing research. In order to do this research, we need the money.
Even with its prevalence in society, researchers only get $28 million dollars. This is less than the
research funds for Autism, Schizophrenia, and Alzheimers Disease. You can donate money for
research at many associations because even one more dollar can lead to another discovery.
(National Eating Disorders Association)
Transition: Sign Post - In conclusion, its never easy to go through any type of psychological
illness.

Conclusion
A. Restate Thesis - Eating disorders, one of Americas deadliest psychological conditions, is often
times disregarded by society.
B. Review of Points - I have talked to you about eating disorders today, its impact on society, and
ways to help this condition.
C. Closing Statement: Plan of Action - If this is something that you are experiencing, have
experienced, are interested in, or even if you know nothing at all, you should get involved. Start
to do research, follow up on whats happening, and donate to help research because you never
know if you could be next.
