Lesson 1

Understanding the Key Words and Phrases

Lesson Overview: Students will learn the key vocabulary terms of multiplication. Students will
write them down in their math journal as the teacher defines each one. Students will understand
the vocabulary terms (factors, product, multiply, and multiplication). They will be able to
identify the math symbols for multiplication using the X. They will be shown the commutative
property of multiplication (3x4=12, 4x3=12). Students will come up with a list of key words that
are used to represent multiplication (See answer key for key multiplication words).
Materials needed:
List of Key Vocabulary and Terms
Document Camera
Interactive Whiteboard
Key Word Template Sheet in Schoology (Appendix A)
White Boards & Dry Erase Markers
Calculators (used for checking answers)
Computer Devices (laptops, iPads)
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify key vocabulary words and terms that
associate with multiplication.
Time: One- class session (45min.)
Classroom Set-up: 20-25 Student desks
Computers, Projectors, Smart Interactive Whiteboard, and Schoology Online System

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity

As students enter the classroom for math, they will be getting out their math
journals and label the top of a new page with the words; Multiplication
Vocabulary Terms. Next, have students take out their whiteboards and dry erase
markers and put it to the side of their desks for the interactive quiz at the end of
the lesson.

Step 2: Content Presentation

The teacher will have the students write and label each multiplication word
(factors, product, multiply, multiplication, X, and the commutative property of

multiplication).
Then, have a classroom discussion to solidify each vocabulary term and walk

around to check students journals.

Handout Key Words Sheet for the students. The teacher puts the worksheet under
the document camera and asks the class to brainstorm. The class will come up
with words that mean multiplication (times, twice the number, double, triple,

multiply, total, find the product, and all together).

The teacher writes down each word until all the words that represent

multiplication are written down.

Students put their math journals away and are going to use their whiteboards and

dry erase markers for the next activity.

Then the teacher will do a quick quiz using whiteboards and dry erase markers.
The teacher will write up a multiplication problem on the interactive whiteboard
in front of the classroom (ex: 4x5=20) and ask students to write the same

multiplication sentence on their white boards.

The teacher will ask the students to label each part of the multiplication sentence
using their dry erase marker (ex: 4=factor, x=multiplication sign, 5= factor,

=equals sign, 20=product).

When each student is done, they will hold up their whiteboard to show the

teacher.
The teacher will give them the thumbs up and or the thumbs down if they have

labeled it correctly.
The teacher will ask the students to write a multiplication sentence and show the
commutative property (ex: 6x3=18, 3x6=18)

When each student is done, they will hold up their white board to show the

teacher.
The teacher will give them the thumbs up and or the thumbs down if they have it

correct.
The teacher will ask the students to write down four words that mean
multiplication (ex: times, twice the number, double, triple, multiply, total, find the

product, and all together).

When each student is done, they will hold up their white board to show the

teacher.
The teacher will give them the thumbs up and or the thumbs down if they have it
correct.

Step 3: Learner Participation

The students are already sitting in their desks. Teacher will help direct students by using

their journals, and white boards for the lesson and quiz at the end.
Students will write down key vocabulary terms in their math journals and the definition

for each one.

Students will help create a list of words that mean multiplication and fill out the key

words sheet (Appendix A).

Students will write on their whiteboards and will be told if their answers are correct by
the teacher.

Step 4: Assessment

The teacher will be conducting a short quiz with the whiteboards/dry erase markers to
check for student understanding of the new multiplication math terms and concepts that
were being taught in the lesson. Calculators can be a technology tool to use in checking
answers only.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

The students will be using their knowledge of this lesson on the next 6 lessons that will be
presented in this unit.

Introduce Schoology to students. Show how log into their personal account and find
activities, assignments, tasks, quizzes, and test. Which will be graded in this online
classroom management system and all necessary worksheets will be uploaded for them to
complete there. It will be labeled as a Ticket Out the Door on their own personal
Schoology account.

Answers Key for Math Journal:

Factors- Multiplication factors are the numbers that are being multiplied in a problem
and are the numbers used in a multiplication sentence between the X symbol.

(Multiplication Factors, 2014).

Product- The answer to a multiplication sentence is called a product.
Multiply- To perform the process of multiplication.
Multiplication- An action in math to make a number bigger and compute addition more

quickly.
X Symbol-An X is represented as a symbol to mean to multiply two or more numbers

together.
Commutative Property of Multiplication-States that it doesnt matter the number order
of the factors in a multiplication sentence the answer (product) is always the same.
