Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, East Africa. It is the tallest mountain in the
world standing at 5,895 meters or 19,341 feet.

Why is Mount Kilimanjaro so tall?
Well it is actually not a regular mountain. Its a giant stratovolcano that began
forming about a million years ago and is composed of many layers of hardened
volcanic ash, lava, pumice and tephra-which is the fragmental material that is the
fallout from a volcanic eruption (2015).
The local map above shows map Kilimanjaro and some of the area it encompasses.
Mount Kilimanjaro is not a part of a mountain range, it stands alone.

The map above is a regional view of Mt. Kilamanjaro. I stated earlier that Mt.
Kilamanjaro is not apart of a mountain range. But there are other mountains
nearby. This regional map shows several other mountains in Tanzania. Mount
Ol Doinyo Lengai is in Tanzania and it is a dormant volcano as well. These
mountains began being formed over 300 million years ago when the Great
Rift Valley was being formed.

Lithosphere

Last but not least is a global view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. From this view you can
see there are many mountains in Africa. There are mountains in just about
every country in Africa. Sudan particularly is interesting because it is a very
mountainous country and many of its mountains are dormant volcanos just
like Kilimanjaro. This map also show that there are mountains in Turkey,
Saudi Arabia and Iran as well.
Why are there so many mountains in Africa?
Ill explain: 1 is because there are many fault lines that run through Africa
such as the Central African Shear zone and the Kandi fault zone. Another
reason is because of the African Rift which is a part of the Great Rift Valley
that began being formed 300 million years ago. This is when the lithosphere
of the earth splits apart. If this continues to happen a second plate will be

created in Africa. When the earth splits apart multiple things can happen,
earthquakes, volcanoes or mountains can form. In the map above that is why
you see a heavy concentration of mountains along the horn of Africa. That is
exactly where the East African rift is located. The Great Rift Valley is the most
well-known Rift in the world. It actually begins in the Middle East and works
its way through East Africa. This is also why you see a heavy concentration of
mountains in the Middle East as well.
