Chapter 20:
1.) Mr. J says to the nurse. This consent form says there is a possibility of permanent
memory loss with ECT. I dont want to lose my memory! How should the nurse
respond to Mr. J.?
ECT can cause anterograde and retrograde amnesia that is most dense around the time of
treatment. The anterograde component usually clears quickly, but the retrograde amnesia
can extend back to months before treatment. It is unclear if the memory loss is due to the
ECT or to ongoing depressive symptoms. Most people do not experience long term
memory loss.
2.) What medication is commonly given before the ECT treatment to decrease
secretions?
Atropine sulfate or glycopyrrolate (Robinul) given intramuscularly. Decreases secretions
and counteracts vagal stimulation.
3.) Why is the client given oxygen during the procedure?
Because Succinylcholine paralyzes respiratory muscles and halts breathing. Pretreating
with pure oxygen helps prevent brain damage due to hypoxia.
Chapter 21:
1.) What is the basic concept of a recovery model?
It is empowerment of the consumer. It is designed to allow consumers primary control
over decisions about their own care.
2.) How is recovery supported by peer groups?
Peer encourage and engage other peers and provide each other with a vital sense of
belonging, supportive relationships, valued roles and community.
3.) What is the focus of the Tidal model of recovery?
Focus is on the individuals personal story, which is where his or her problems first
appeared and where any growth, benefit, or recovery will be found.
4.) What is the intended outcome in the Psychological Recovery Model?
The intended outcome is growth. It is also the final stage of the model.
Chapter 22:
1.) An Alteration in which neurotransmitter is most closely associated with the etiology
of Alzheimers disease?
A decreased in the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine has been implicated in AD.
2.) How does vascular neurocognitive disorder (NCD) differ from NCD due to
Alzheimers disease?
Vascular NCD differs fro AD in that it has a more abrupt onset and runs a highly variable
course.

3.) What is pseudo-dementia?


It is caused by depression. It is often misdiagnosed and treated inadequately.
4.) What is the primary concern for nurses working with clients with NCDs?
***The primary concern for nurses is client safety.
